Home Arts and Crafts Architecture basic information Japanese houses have thin walls because of the mild climate and overlapping, slanted, and slightly curved roofs because of the fact that there is plenty of rain especially during early summer. Timber is the traditional building material for Japanese houses. It makes them airy which is important during the humid summer months. The disadvantages are that the houses can be damaged easily by earthquakes and fires. Nowadays, concrete and steel are, of course, widely used as well.

Architecture is a fine art devoted to the design of the human environment. The architect is concerned with the aesthetic, social, environmental, technological and psychological factors that influence the design of a building and determine its success, quality and appearance within the context of community.
Background Information
To become an architect you must learn to make use of science and technology, and develop sensitivity for beauty in the design of space, form and material. You also must develop a deep understanding of and keenly feel the relationship between people and their surroundings. Because this work encompasses so many different fields of interest, the architect is best thought of as a professional who bridges different areas of study and blends them into a single significant activity.
Career Opportunities
Architects work in architectural firms or accept positions with government, corporations or institutions. Some architects become highly specialized; others remain generalists in the profession, working on all facets of a project. Whichever path your career may follow, it is necessary to first build a firm background that includes essential architectural knowledge and skills.

The School of Architecture We all know that architects design buildings and the physical environment. However, contemporary architectural practice often does much more. Architects are concerned with preserving and adapting older buildings; supporting and shaping social interactions that take place among people in buildings, neighborhoods, and cities; using and inventing building technology; and creating a physical world that is rich in diversity, addressing sustainable and urban design issues, and expressive meaning. To prepare students for this type of work, the Architecture undergraduate curriculum at the College of Design balances specialized architectural studies with a broad general education that includes mathematics, natural science, verbal communications, social sciences and humanities. The four-year, pre-professional Bachelor of Environmental Design in Architecture qualifies students to pursue careers in architectural offices, building construction, development and public agencies. To become a licensed architect in North Carolina and other states, the BEDA graduate will have to complete an additional fifth year of study in a Bachelor of Architecture program or a two-year Master of Architecture program. Both of these accredited professional degree programs are offered at NC State University. The final requirements for licensure are a period of professional training and passing the Architectural Registration Examination.

    Roman Architecture for Kids
    Roman Architecture
Roman baths in Paris One of the things the Romans are most famous for is their architecture. The Romans brought a lot of new ideas to architecture , of which the three most important are the arch , the baked brick , and the use of cement and concrete.
Around 700 BC the Etruscans learned West Asian ideas about architecture, and they taught these ideas to the Romans. We don't have much Etruscan architecture left, but a lot of their underground tombs do survive, and some traces of their temples.
In the Republican period , the Romans built temples and basilicas , but also they made a lot of improvements to their city: aqueducts and roads and sewers . The Forum began to take shape. Outside of Rome, people began to build stone amphitheaters for gladiatorial games
The first Roman emperor, Augustus , made more changes: he built a lot of brick and marble buildings , including a big Altar of Peace and a big tomb for his family, and a big stone theater for plays. Augustus' stepson Tiberius rebuilt the Temple of Castor and Pollux in the Roman forum.

    Architecture Overview
The following sections are devoted to overviews of the GNOME architecture, with examples and notes from the authors themselves. For the most part, these sections are technical in topic, and are aimed at the developer. However, they are presented in a non-technical manner, and people just interested in seeing what the GNOME development environment has to offer should feel at home.
    GTK+
GTK+ is the base widget toolkit GNOME uses. It was an offshoot of the GIMP project, and is licensed under the LGPL. It is written primarily in C, although a large number of language bindings are available. Much of the code in GNOME is inspired by the GTK+ project.
    GNOME Desktop
The desktop component of GNOME is closer to what is traditionally thought of as GNOME. Here you can find information on the higher-level technologies used by GNOME.
    Internationalization
GNOME has some support for Internationalization (I18N) and Localization (L10N), and more is on the way. This provides a transparent way for translators to customize applications in GNOME without the application author doing much work.
    Documentation
GNOME has a large amount of user and developer (API) documentation available.

Half Dose #43: Tile for Yu-un
With all the hoopla last week around Olafur Eliasson's "four man-made waterfalls , 90 to 120 feet high, [that] will punctuate New York’s waterfront for three months starting in mid-July," it seemed like an appropriate time to look at the Icelandic artists other environmental installations.
    source

One project rather far removed from both the East River in geography and scale that stands out is this courtyard "lining" for a house/gallery by Tadao Ando in Tokyo.
With an obvious penchant for collecting art, client Takeo Obayashi named the place Yu-un, a combination of the Japanese characters for wonder and hermitage. It is a name that Ando says has quite a deep meaning, as can be expected.
    source

Ando's signature spare, concrete-and-glass spaces are punctuated in the middle of the N-shaped plan by Eliasson's 6,800+ platinum-glazed ceramic tiles, their surfaces changing in color and intensity depending upon the conditions of light.
Where one usually finds in Ando's houses a center of calm and retreat, the courtyard here is a dynamic space activated by the reflection of natural and artificial light off the multi-faceted surfaces. Additionally, the views across the courtyard keep the ceramic tiles an almost constant presence in the multi-faceted life of the businessman-cum-art collector.
