Like many investors, I've been wondering how the erratic stock market will affect the housing industry. Will Americans finally start building smaller homes? How can we cut corners? Architects and house designers say the best way to save is to do building cost estimations early in the planning stage. Knowing how much the project might cost will help you modify your plans to meet your budget. How? Here are money-saving tips

Architecture and Sex
Yes, of course, some architects are male and some are female. But what of the buildings? Does a Victorian cottage, dolled up in gingerbread, seem "female"? Is a rough-hewn stone castle "male"? How would you describe the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Turkey? The questions might strike you as a bit absurd, but many serious architecture scholars are looking closely at the relationship between architecture and human anatomy and human sexuality. Join us for an Architecture and Sex photo tour , then cast your vote for the "sexiest" buildings Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Turkey is one of the world's most beautiful buildings, and was a finalist in the campaign to select New World Wonders. Is it male or female?

No. 364 . 16 January 2008 Talking with Taniguchi
by C. B. Liddell Some Westerners, when faced with Oriental creativity, have a tendency to get a little carried away. Instead of a balanced, rational approach, a tendency emerges to ascribe the aesthetic effect of what they see to some mysterious, spiritual force that is absent from their own culture, whether it be called Zen, Tao, wabi-sabi, or yin and yang. This is, of course, the obverse side of the attitude that the Palestinian-American scholar Edward Said so scathingly exposed in his seminal work Orientalism (1978), which highlighted the ways that different cultures and societies distort and exoticize each other. Although misconceptions may actually add luster to his creations, Japanese architect Yoshio Taniguchi — most famous for his redesign of New York's Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), completed in 2004 — is keen to downplay such mystical elements in his work. For example, the perfectly balanced inverse relationship of the circle and the square in one of his earliest designs, the Shiseido Art Museum (1978), built for Japan's leading cosmetic company, seems an obvious echo of the ideal harmony between the masculine yang and feminine yin principles in Eastern thought.

        Mission
leads the evolution of the web, empowering individuals, increasing social and economic efficiency, and exploiting the power of computing in our everyday lives. Exploiting that power is the mission of the W3C Architecture Domain. The Architecture Domain has the mission to maintain and extend some of the Core technologies of the World Wide Web, including URI/IRI XML DOM Web Services , and Internationalization . The W3C Architecture technologies enable people to exchange data on the Web every day from the protocol level, with HTTP and SOAP, and to the application level, with XML, XML Schema, or WSDL. It also includes technologies for data manipulation, with XSL Transformations, DOM, or XML Query. Our focus is to improve the stability of the existing platform, with our work on XML, Web Services, or Internationalization. This includes interoperability between world wide applications, and extending their capabilities.
        Activities
        Extensible Markup Language (XML) Activity
From the introduction of the Extensible Markup Language (XML) Activity Statement The Extensible Markup Language ( XML ) is a simple, flexible text format derived from SGML (ISO 8879). The W3C created, developed and continues to maintain the XML specification. The W3C is also the primary center for developing other cross-industry specifications that are based on XML. Some of these are being done within the XML Activity, such as XML Query and XML Schema, and some are being done in other W3C Activities, such as Web Services, SVG and XHTML. The XML Activity tries to keep a balance between maintaining stability and backwards compatibility, making improvements that help to encourage interoperability, and bringing new communities into the world of XML.

Purpose and Origin
The term client/server was first used in the 1980s in reference to personal computers (PCs) on a network. The actual client/server model started gaining acceptance in the late 1980s. The client/server software architecture is a versatile, message-based and modular infrastructure that is intended to improve usability flexibility interoperability , and scalability as compared to centralized, mainframe, time sharing computing. A client is defined as a requester of services and a server is defined as the provider of services. A single machine can be both a client and a server depending on the software configuration. For details on client/server software architectures see Schussel and Edelstein [ Schussel 96 Edelstein 94 This technology description provides a summary of some common client/server architectures and, for completeness, also summarizes mainframe and file sharing architectures. Detailed descriptions for many of the individual architectures are provided elsewhere in the document.

An architect’s house could be his ultimate expression of his relationship to the surrounding world. Arthur Casas positioned his own House in Iporanga outside of Sao Paulo deep in the Atlantic forest — the quintessential Brazilian landscape according to Casas.
Two symmetrical rectangular cubes face one another on the north and south sides of the site. Two retractable 36 foot-high glass walls connect the cubes and frame the main living and dining rooms of the house. The entire exterior is paneled in Cumaru wood that blends effortlessly into the surrounding forest.
Cumaru is also used inside as flooring where it stands out against the stark white walls – the only “color” found in the minimalist space. To an architect, one of the defining features of the overall design of a structure is effective interior spatial division. In his own house, Casas successfully divided the ground floor into distinct public and private areas. The kitchen and service area — including a separate bedroom and bathroom — were placed in the north cube structure. A studio and a guest bedroom and bathroom are located on the opposite side. The entire space is connected by the vast living room flanked by wood terraces on both ends. An infinity pool appears to be spilling over to soak the surrounding flora.
A floating Cumaru stairway leads to the first level, where one finds the master suite in the southern cube. A narrow bridge crosses over the middle of the living room and leads to an additional guest bedroom, bathroom and a home theater.
