Four Primary Objectives of the ENS Project:
Assess the status and trends of aquatic ecological conditions (invertebrates, fish, algae and habitat) in rivers and wadeable streams. Relate ecological conditions to chemical stressors (such as nutrients and pesticides), physical disturbances (such as habitat and hydrologic alterations) in the context of different environmental settings and land uses. Enhance understanding of factors that influence the biological integrity of streams and how these stream ecosystems may respond to diverse natural and human factors. Develop key ecological indicators of aquatic health.

Implemented in 1991, data have been collected by NAWQA on chemistry, hydrology, land use, stream habitat, and aquatic life in parts or all of nearly 50 States using a nationally consistent study design and uniform methods of sampling ( access method, sampling, and analytical protocols

Amazon Rivers Program
Program Director: Dr. Michael Goulding
The Amazon Rivers Program of the Amazon Conservation Association (ACA) focuses on river basin management and conservation biology in the Amazon Basin. Special emphasis is given to the ecology of fish. Fish are the ideal candidates for building awareness of the world's greatest rainforest-river ecosystems - those of the Amazon. Everything about Amazon fish and their interactions with the rainforest is impressive. Aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems are inextricably bound. Many fish depend on fruits and seeds from flooded forests, unique habitats that support tremendous biodiversity, yet remain under serious threat. Migratory fish provide 80% of the protein consumed by people in the Amazon. They depend on intact forests and healthy watersheds, thus making excellent surrogates for overall monitoring and assessment for ecosystem and watershed health.

The Aquatic Ecology Laboratories are located in the Environmental Educati August 17, 2005 The laboratory, part of the Department of Biological Sciences, is associated with the Institute of Applied Sciences and is under the direction of Dr. James H. Kennedy. Our research includes both basic and applied ecology projects and focuses on five areas: stream ecology, aquatic insect biology, biodiversity studies, the use of macroinvertebrates in the ecological risk assessment process and environmental education. This research is conducted in a diverse range of aquatic ecosystems that include springs, wetlands, streams, rivers and impoundments. The laboratory has hosted workshops, and routinely provides support to the UNT Elm Fork Education Program , and the Lake Lewisville Education Learning Area
    Goals:
    • To provide opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students to study and conduct research in freshwater ecology, especially as it relates to ecology of aquatic invertebrates, stream/river ecology, and aquatic field ecotoxicology. To provide logistical and technical support for UNT faculty and other institutions engaged in aquatic studies.

    Edited by Gene E. Likens
Originally published in 1983, An Ecosystem Approach to Aquatic Ecology is a unique, comprehensive analysis of a lake ecosystem. It summarizes and integrates results from the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study, one of the most extensive long-term studies of a watershed ever undertaken. The Hubbard Brook Ecosystem study produced two widely acclaimed earlier volumes - Biogeochemistry of a forested ecosystem and Pattern and Process in a Forested Ecosystem - about natural and disturbed terrestrial ecosystems in the Hubbard Brook Valley in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. This new volume integrates the ecology and biogeochemistry of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems to describe the interactions of Mirror Lake with its watershed and airshed.
This comprehensive work presents an enormous data base and reference listing. As a model study in limnology, it is an essential text-reference for both the student and the practicing researcher.
Dr. Gene E. Likens is President and Director of the Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook, New York. He also holds professorships at Cornell University, Yale University, Rutgers University, SUNY-Albany, and the University of Connecticut, Storrs. In April 2000 he was appointed to the G. Evelyn Hutchinson Chair in Ecology at IES.
In January 2006, the U.S. Forest Service honored Dr. Likens with a Science Leadership Award for his pioneering research on watershed ecology. Dr. Likens received the National Medal of Science at a White House ceremony on 12 June 2002 for his work on the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study, which revealed valuable insight into how watersheds respond to human-induced environmental change, from air pollution to logging.

Project Title: Modeling Sediment Dynamics in the St. Croix River and the Impact on Federally Endangered Mussels [2008-2010] - Dan Hornbach, Kelly MacGregor, Mark Hove
    Description
Recent studies have shown that juvenile mussel density is decreasing in native mussel communities that harbor Federally-listed mussel species. These declines have been accompanied by increased sediment deposition at these locations. One location is listed as an Essential Habitat Area in the Higgins Eye Recovery Plan. Other monitoring sites on the river have not experienced the decline in juvenile mussels or the increase in sediment deposition. Those sites which have seen declines are found in a 10-mile stretch of river downstream of a hydroelectric dam at St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin. This project will help resource managers understand the forces which may be leading to the changes in sedimentation rates. A model of the relationship between discharge and sediment transport will be developed, suspended sediment transport will be monitored, and sediment cores from the reservoir above the dam will be examined, as will the forces of shear-stress above and below the dam.
