Review of Test 1
Dear all,
I'd done marking test 1. The results is on my softboard now..
In general, you are doing fine.. Still need more improvement.. Please read, and read and discuss with your friends and see me if you don't understand.. Only a very few getting above 90! Congratulation.
I'm not happy with some! There are 12 people fail (marks below 40) which I think you will have problems in final exam. My advice is working harder..!!! This subject is not that easy, IF you think it is easy but it won't kill you - so, do read notes and book! OK
Happy holiday and all the best in your final exam..

SCIENTIFIC FOCUS
INTRODUCTION
The Aquatic Ecology Branch investigates the scientific basis and means to conserve, preserve, and recover the Nation's natural resources. Research addresses ecological questions throughout the Eastern United States, with particular emphasis on the mid-Atlantic and New England. Our strategy has been to address issues of aquatic species, population, and habitat management that are urgent, long term, and scientifically groundbreaking. Our research capabilities provide a variety of approaches toward establishing status and trends, and understanding underlying causes of trends of declining and threatened species and their habitats. RESEARCH CORE RESEARCH CAPABILITIES AND EXPERTISE • Molecular genetics Develop primers, genetic markers, and other means of assessing population structure and taxonomy of a wide variety of aquatic and aquatically associated species, and investigate novel uses of genetics to identify and recover species at risk.  Current emphases include anadromous fish, freshwater fish, freshwater and marine invertebrates, amphibians and reptiles, and mammals.

The Institute of Aquatic Ecology carries out theoretical research in marine ecology and regular observations of marine environment monitoring upon the request of the state institutions and the Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission as well as takes part in working out a study programme and its implementation at the Faculties of Biology and Chemistry of the University of Latvia. Practically oriented research work is carried out as well-mainly in the environmental impact assessment of projects of the national economy influencing the environment of the sea. The Institute possesses a scientific research vessel "Antonija".

However, the major focus is on wetland palaeoecology and ecological succession of aquatic ecosystems. Research is regularly conducted at Hillsdale's G. H. Gordon Biological Station in Luther, Michigan. Dr. Swinehart’s students work very hard on their research, and many have received awards at scientific meetings for their research presentations. Many of his students are currently involved in preparing manuscripts for publication. Graduates receive master's and doctorates in biology at top universities or gain employment immediately after graduation. Student Workshops
Each participating high school brings a maximum of 28 students for a workshop that has a variety of goals focusing on acquiring (1) scientific inquiry research skills, (2) ecological and environmental knowledge, and (3) awareness and appreciation of the natural world. Scientific Inquiry Research Skills The primary goal of the workshop is to enhance science education by helping students become more competent and confident at doing good scientific inquiry using an ecology or environmental issues theme. Guided by a customized workbook, students are challenged to work cooperatively as ecologists and carry out a well-designed science research study. We pose two or three real-world research questions that deal with biodiversity, energy production and aquatic pollution. The students develop a hypothesis for each question and plan their research. The plan must demonstrate good research methodology (e.g., avoiding sampling bias and collecting a number of replicate samples). Students obtain comparative data for analysis by wading along the edge of the water and sometimes canoeing.

Aquatic Ecology & "Dead Zone"
From the loss of the Great Black Swamp to the burning of the Cuyahoga River to the changes induced by the Clean Water Act to the recent reemergence of the "Dead Zone," the Lake Erie ecosystem is in a constant state of change. It is imperative that academia, decision makers, and resource users understand these changes as they arise, and Sea Grant research significantly impacts this understanding.
