Culture Matters
Much like the CHOCD blog, Culture Matters chronicles articles, studies, and other recent events that involve culture. They are concerned with applied anthropology in particular. The main contributors are Pal Nyiri and Jovan Maud. Pal believes that applied anthropology can be used "to build safeguards into systems in which the idea of “culture” is often hijacked, leading to flawed and even harmful interventions." Jovan notes that "the discipline is increasingly being applied in ‘non-traditional’ areas" such as product design and marketing. Both contributors and the blog are associated with Macquarie University in New South Wales, Australia
A visitor to Culture Matters will find everything from Microsoft's take on anthropology to the Native Hawaiians' protests to stop the genetic alteration of the sacred taro plant.

Graduate
The Graduate Programs in Applied Anthropology at USF aim to develop creative scholars and scientists who will apply their knowledge and skills to contemporary human problems, whether as academics or practitioners. The department offers M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Applied Anthropology, through which students learn the fundamentals of the four subfields of anthropology, their links with one another, and their relation to other academic disciplines. While appreciating such interdisciplinary ties, students in both degree programs follow one of three course tracks: Cultural, Biological, or Archaeology, which each has required and elective classes.
USF is affordable!
Some graduate assistantships are offered at both M.A. and Ph.D. levels (see Financial Assistance and Scholarships). However, even without an assistantship, USF Anthropology can be surprisingly affordable. The Academic Common Market allows residents of Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia to apply for in-state Florida tuition (among the very lowest in the nation), if the specific degree is not offered in their home states. Because Applied Anthropology is a relatively rare degree, many students have successfully applied for the program. For full details and application procedures, go to

Applied Anthropology at UGA integrates anthropological perspectives and methods into solving human problems throughout the world; to advocate for fair and just public policy based upon sound research; to promote public recognition of anthropology as a profession; and to support the continuing professionalization of the field. UGA anthropologists demonstrate a particular capability in helping to solve human problems through building partnerships in research and problem solving; acknowledging the perspectives of all people involved; focusing on challenges and opportunities presented by biological variability, cultural diversity, ethnicity, gender, poverty and class; and addressing imbalances in resources, rights, and power. Such contributions are most effective in interdisciplinary settings where active and committed social scientists work in partnership with active and committed representatives of community, national, and international constituencies. UGA anthropology has several members of its faculty engaged in the practice of applied anthropology. Their research spans a gamut of interests from sustainable agriculture, conservation and the impacts of development on traditional communities. Please visit our faculty page to learn the specifics of the variety of the exciting work being done by UGA anthropologists.

55. Applied Anthropology, Annotated Bibliography Guidelines
The topic that you focus on can be anything within applied anthropology that has produced a relatively large body of literature.
http://www.iupui.edu/~anthpm/annotate.html
The topic that you focus on can be anything within applied anthropology that has produced a relatively large body of literature. In general, you want a broad topic, rather than a highly specific topic; for instance, the anthropology of contemporary health care is a rich body of research, but the anthropology of health care in Indianapolis is unlikely to produce sufficient research. But at the same time, you also do not want to choose too broadly: e.g., the anthropology of health care, for example, would fill several volumes. You will be expected to use campus resources as much as possible, but do not expect everything to be on campus. Do not entertain the possibility that the paper can be written by spending a few evenings on Google, even though Google Scholar is an outstanding online resource; your work with electronic resources will need to troll beyond the simple search engines. The region has strong academic libraries that you should use either in person or via inter-library loan. You must turn in a proposal for your annotated bibliography subject by September 18 that includes at least 10 references on your subject, five of which must be annotated, and includes roughly one paragraph detailing the subject. I absolutely will NOT accept any annotated bibliography at semester's end that is on a subject that has not been previously approved. The completed bibliography is due to me

New Programs:
PhD in Applied Anthropology
In a rapidly changing world impacted by powerful institutions, the relationships among key societal institutions are changing. Global interconnectedness has transformed the ways we work together, as government and citizens, corporations and consumers, organizations and communities. To serve their various constituencies effectively, many institutions are realizing they need a deeper understanding of the perspectives, values, and experiences that shape their interactions. This is opening a wealth of professional opportunities in the field of applied anthropology. Three areas of concentration within the program correspond to the realms where anthropologists have broad opportunities for social, economic, and professional benefits. The first, Local Values, Indigenous Knowledge, and Environment, will position graduates to work in museums, schools, parks, and other agencies and interest groups concerned with the protection and sustainability of natural and cultural resources. The second, Ethnicity, Culture, and Health, will prepare students for jobs that focus on multicultural health, family planning, health demography, and related areas. The third, Business, Organization, and Work, will train students to understand and help redefine the complex dynamics between global industrial forces and communities, working within corporations, government and non-profit organizations.
