Homo Politicus
7 January, 2008
Homo Politicus: The Strange and Scary Tribes that Run Our Government Potomac Man, that strange indigenous tribe inhabiting the area in and around Washington, D.C. official book synopsis Deep within the forbidding land encircled by the Washington Beltway lives the tribe known as Homo Politicus. Their ways are strange, even repulsive, to civilized human beings, their arcane rites often impenetrable, their language coded and obscure, violating their complex taboos can lead to sudden, harsh, and irrevocable punishment. Normal Americans have long feared Homo Politicus, with good reason. But fearless anthropologist (and Washington Post columnist) Dana Milbank has spent many years immersed in the dark heart of Washington, D.C., and has produced this indispensable portrait of a bizarre culture whose tribal ways are as hilarious as they are outrageous.

Class Description: The purpose of this course is to provide an understanding of the ways in which anthropological knowledge, methods, perspectives, and research can be applied in dealing with real-world problems.
Applied Anthropology involves putting anthropology "to work," or into "practice" or "action," to work with the public and solve contemporary human problems. While Applied Anthropology is the most commonly used term, today it is also referred to as Practicing Anthropology and Public Anthropology. Applied work spans all four fields of anthropology. Applied Anthropology practitioners work in economic development, community planning, business, tourism, refugee camps, in programs providing health care and educational assistance to communities and groups, in cultural preservation and resource management, in forensics, as well as in many other areas in which anthropological knowledge of human behavior and cultures can be put to use.

Anthropology Anthropologists have long applied their knowledge, skills and methods to meet the diverse needs of communities, indigenous peoples, public agencies from the local to the global levels, non-profit and non-government organizations, and business. Applying anthropology involves combining theory, ethnographic insight, and methodological expertise towards practical ends. In doing so, anthropologists bear in mind their ethical obligations to the communities in which they work, as well as their obligations to the entities or groups that they are working with. The ability to work in inter- and multi-disciplinary settings is a major aspect of contemporary applied anthropology – and a central feature of our graduate program in Anthropology within the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs . Applied anthropologists practice their craft in fields as diverse as law, medicine, health care, agriculture, forestry, health, environmental and social planning, tourism, cultural resource management (including archaeological sites), indigenous rights, forestry, conflict management, social services, and communications. Some of the many roles assumed by applied anthropologists include administrator, policy or social analyst, program or project evaluator, planner, project designer, researcher, and trainer. Faculty members in our department have carried out applied assignments and applied-oriented research in a number of countries, including the United States, Egypt, Peru, India, Ghana, Bolivia, Brazil, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Jamaica, the Virgin Islands, and Canada for entities ranging from the First Nations to the United Nations. For example, faculty members have recently worked on issues such as food security, community health care, natural resource conflicts, micro-credit, relocation, and election monitoring. What unites our work is a shared vision of anthropology that seeks to contribute to local empowerment through the fostering of broadly based participatory processes.

INSTITUTIONS Horizon Scanning Centre Institute for the Future Category: Science and Technology Domain: Social Sciences Keywords: Environment and human behaviour - anthropology, applied anthropology, medical anthropology, design anthropology Outlook: The rise of applied anthropology is likely to challenge the traditional structure of the discipline. Summary Analysis: While social anthropologists have traditionally flocked to so-called exotic locations - studying sexual mores in Polynesia or examining ceremonial exchange in Melanesia for example - recently they have become more interested in issues closer to home: examining how people use technology for instance. Some anthropologists are helping businesses identify consumer behaviour from the perspective of the consumer, others are working in rural and urban areas finding out how people make health decisions. As information technology becomes more and more embedded in everyday life, anthropologists are helping designers develop new forms of engagement with users, interfaces, and use contexts. Contemporary cultural anthropology speaks to at least two distinct audiences - one primarily academic audience focused on humanities and critical theory, and another primarily NGO, public health, and corporate audience focused on natural sciences, empiricism, and practical applications. There has been little overlap between the two groups, but as more and more anthropology PhDs, even those with degrees from elite universities that follow the theoretical model, are working in the applied field, universities are acknowledging the importance of applied anthropology and the opportunities associated with it. Fields which have successfully bridged the gap between theory and practice include medical anthropology (one of the fastest growing subfields within anthropology), and the study of science and technology. In the future, more and more applied fields of anthropology are likely to emerge.

Departmental Certificate in Applied Anthropology
A Masters degree in Anthropology with a Departmental Certificate in Applied Anthropology is designed to attract and train graduate students to prepare them for advanced study in anthropology and/or to ready them for work outside academia. The Applied Anthropology Certificate builds on the Department's existing strengths in four-field Anthropology. It offers students the opportunity to combine applied-oriented course work and fieldwork/internship experiences with a premier education in four-field anthropology. Students completing the necessary requirements in Applied Anthropology, and who have completed their Master's degree, will receive a Certificate from the Department of Anthropology. The goal of the Departmental Certificate is to provide students a solid foundation in applied anthropological methods, exposure to the universe of applied anthropological topics, and an understanding of the relationship between theory and practice. Interests in applied anthropology can be combined with the following areas of faculty expertise:
  • Southeast Asia
  • North America
  • Cultural Resource Management
  • Development
  • Agricultural Anthropology
  • Environment
