Applied anthropology refers to the application of method and theory in anthropology to the analysis and solution of practical problems. Inasmuch as anthropology proper comprises four sub-disciplines biological, cultural, linguistic, and archaeological anthropology the practical application of any of these sub-disciplines may properly be designated "applied anthropology". Indeed, some practical problems may invoke all sub-disciplines. For example, a Native American community development program may involve archaeological research to determine legitimacy of water rights claims, ethnography may involve assessing the current and recent historical cultural characteristics of the community, linguistics may be applied to restoring language competetence, and biological, or more specifically "medical" anthropology may be applied to determine the factors contributing to dietary deficiency diseases, etc. Some regard applied anthropology to be a fifth sub-discipline of anthropology that applies anthropological data, perspectives, theory, and methods to identify, assess and solve contemporary social problems.

What is Anthropology? Careers in Anthropology Community and Business Partnerships
Applied anthropology is simply "anthropology put to use" (to quote John Van Willigen). It is any kind of anthropological research that is done to solve practical problems. This means that there are stakeholders and clients who stand to gain or lose from the project.
Anthropology can be used to solve problems in an enormous variety of fields. Here are some common examples: Health and medicine Business Human rights Education Environmental issues Community development Museums International development Applied anthropologists can take on very different roles in their work. They may be one or more of the following: Researchers Policy analysts Program evaluators Needs assessors Impact assessors Community advocates Trainers Culture brokers Managers Change agents Consultants To see the range of the work applied anthropologists do, you can look at the applied projects and interests of the faculty in UNT's anthropology program: Faculty's Applied Interests and Consulting Specialties Examples of Applied Projects of Faculty Members As you can see, applied anthropology is not just one kind of job. It can be many different things. What unites applied anthropologists is their perspective on the world. They are trained to look at societies holistically, to respect cultural differences, and to learn about social phenomena through a careful process of observation and interviewing. The flexibility of their possible career directions means that applied anthropologists often have a creative, entrepreneurial bent.

Applied anthropology uses the theories, methods, and ethnographic findings of anthropology to solve human problems. Applied anthropology at CSULB focuses on practicing anthropology in three program options. These are: communities/organizations, health, and education. Where Do Practicing and Applied Anthropologists Work?
Today, most applied anthropologists are practitioners who use cross-cultural knowledge and anthropological methods for research and action around the world, not only from a university base. Practicing anthropologists are found in all business, government, health, education, and human services domains. They may work for congresswomen, in hospitals, school districts, research and consulting firms, or state and local governments. They are often researchers but more and more, they don't just study problems. These anthropologists are often administrators, program directors, and even business owners. They craft and manage solutions. What Do Applied and Practicing Anthropologists Do?

MISSION STATEMENT
Omertaa, journal for Applied Anthropology, was launched in January, 2007. It is an international peer reviewed journal, with an academic board, publishing on issues which belong to the broader field of Applied Anthropology and related issues. The offices are located in Leuven (Belgium), which is also the residence of the supporting organisation: Expeditions, Research in Applied Anthropology
The concept 'Omert ' is commonly known in the meaning given to it through popular movies and literature in the late 30's as a code of silence practised by the Mafia; a refusal to give evidence to the police about criminal activities. The 'Omert ' as it is seen in the perspective of this journal traces the concept back to its underlying cultural form. It is a widely known and applied social system of peasant cultures of which we can find the basics in every culture: the conspiracy of silence. The etymology of the word is often traced back to its presumed Spanish roots where it refers to 'manliness' ( hombredad ). We however prefer the Latin roots: a dialectal alteration of umilt  (humility, modesty, from Latin

Instruction Applied Anthropology at the University of Arizona The Department of Anthropology at the University of Arizona offers one of the nation's most attractive and unique programs in applied anthropology. While BARA, as an academic research unit, does not offer a degree, its faculty are actively engaged in the teaching and mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students in the Department of Anthropology . BARA also offers applied students a rare opportunity to participate in on-going research and outreach projects. This dynamic synergy between classroom theory and applied field experience is the hallmark of the applied program at the University of Arizona. The philosophical and pedagogical foundation of the applied program is built upon the critical interdependence of theory and practice in the production of knowledge. Thus, BARA systematically incorporates students into its array of research projects and seeks to instill them with the essential analytical and research skills that will propel them into fulfilling careers both inside and outside of academia. At any given time, BARA provides research support to around 20 students, and BARA offers the William H. Kelly Award to one in-coming graduate student each year.

History SOPA, the Society of Professional Anthropologists, was established in Tucson, Arizona as the first local practitioner organization (LPO) in 1974 (van Willigen 1993:35; Fiske and Chambers 1997: 285). Though SOPA disbanded within a decade, it served as the model for many other regional organizations, such as the Washington Association of Practicing Anthropologists (in D.C.)and the High Plains Society for Applied Anthropology (in Boulder, CO.), which serve as "grassroots" organizations providing members with a forum to share common concerns, to establish identity, and to network with other professionals. Roughly a dozen LPOs are currently operating in the U.S. (Fiske and Chambers 1997: 285). In 1983, the National Association for the Practice of Anthropology (NAPA) was founded specifically to address the interests of practitioners and advance the professionalization of anthropologists. (Fiske and Chambers 1997: 286). Though both SfAA and NAPA have tried to represent the interests of all the sub-fields of anthropology, both organizations are dominated by cultural anthropologists and their interests (Fiske and Chambers 1997: 286). Archaeologists have formed their own organizations, such as the Society of Professional Archaeologists (SOPA). Career Opportunities / Employment
There are numerous examples of how each subfield is represented in applied employment. Archaeologists are found working for the National Park Service (with forest, fisheries, and parks) and in cultural resource management. Some forensic anthropologists rely on techniques of physical anthropology to assist in medical / legal cases. Linguistic anthropologists may design bilingual education programs. Medical anthropologists might be interested in how culture affects the way people seek health care. Sociocultural anthropologists could be focused domestically, on corporate work culture and the relationship between productivity and management policy, or internationally; studying the impact non-military foreign aid has on local communities (Eddy and Partridge 1987: 49).

Master Of Arts in Applied Anthropology
The applied anthropology degree program is designed for non-anthropologists who are already engaged in, or plan to enter, such fields as medicine, public health, education, journalism, law, environmental management, social services to refugee or immigrant populations, rural development, or public policy evaluation. It is designed to provide the student with a basic anthropological training and an appreciation of the significance of a cross-cultural perspective in professional practice. The master's degree is neither required nor encouraged as a stepping stone to the Ph.D. Those persons intending to become professional anthropologists should apply directly to the Ph.D. program. This is not a part-time program. Prerequisites Applicants must have obtained a degree in some discipline other than anthropology and have an expressed intention to continue working in, or enter, that field. Prospective students should also explain in their written statements how they expect anthropology to enhance their capability or improve their effectiveness in their chosen career. This is important because students who enter the program with well-defined goals derive the most benefit from the resources the Department and the University have to offer. Under exceptional circumstances, applications for this program may be considered after the regular application deadline date. The Graduate Record Examination must also be taken by all applicants.
