They pollinate such crops as apples, cucumbers, melons and pumpkins along with seed crops such as sunflowers and canola. The apiary program, through a system of state and county inspectors, coordinates disease inspections to help insure a healthy beekeeping industry. Beekeepers are required to register their apiaries annually with the program so the colonies may be easily located and examined for various diseases and parasites. The apiary program works closely with the USDA to properly identify any suspected problem prior to recommending a control procedure to the beekeeper. In 2006, as many parts of the country were experiencing the Africanized Honey Bee, Ohio was also testing aggressive colonies for any Africanized traits. There were no tested colonies showing positive Africanization.
