Abstract
www.clipart.com This publication discusses various aspects of beekeeping or apiculture, including state inspection programs, beginning basics, income sources and budgets, insurance, Africanized bees, organic certification, and various bee pests and diseases. Information on educational and training opportunities and further resources are also discussed.

Introduction
This publication is intended as a guide for anyone interested in beginning or expanding a beekeeping enterprise. Whether the bees are kept as pollinators for crops or for the income from their products, producers need to be aware of their states' apiary laws concerning inspection, registration, and permits, as well as labeling and marketing standards. Producers also need to be aware of pesticide application laws and pesticide notification laws relative to bees. Both beginning and experienced beekeepers need to consider liability insurance; the possibility of Africanized hybrid bees taking over the hives; and all the pests and diseases that afflict bees and their colonies.

(Results will be a weekly bee-l log and/or a monthly news article file. You will then need to use your browser to search for your keyword.) Apiculture is very diverse; our fostering of several insect species to pollinate our crops and produce honey, wax, propolis and venom occurs worldwide. The old beekeeping adage: "There are as many ways to keep bees as there are beekeepers" describes this amazing diversity in beekeeping. Logically then, there is no "proper" way to keep bees, no "right" way to manage for honey production, or to rear queensthe best we can do as good beekeepers and as good neighbors is to share our techniques, lore, knowledge and experiences, basing them upon a rigorous foundation in insect biology. To assume though, that this foundation is stable, would be naive. Every year, new research, and new facts about the fascinating lives our eusocial friends the Honey Bees lead, help us to be more successful beekeepers. This archive is a repository for beekeeping information. If you have trouble finding something, or if you want to add something, please do not hesitate to contact the curator by e-mail:

WorldChanging Team

If ever you needed a visual example of the value of ecosystem services , try envisioning an army of human laborers attempting to pollinate an orchard of fruit trees by hand, one blossom at a time. Absurdly enough, an alarming decrease of bee populations worldwide, known as Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), has some farmers hiring teams to do just that. With much of our focus on bigger species as indications of environmental crisis polar bears drowning, grizzly bears terminating hibernation early we sometimes forget about the little creatures that keep things in balance. But bees are an important provider of the ecosystem service of pollination, and as calamity strikes it is all the more obvious how important they are in the agricultural economy . From a strictly financial perspective, pollination is an invaluable service, provided by bees at no cost. But the cost we'd incur if the buzzing workers disappeared has been estimated at anywhere between $14 billion and $92 billion in the U.S. alone.

What is Apiculture?
Apiculture is the management and study of honeybees.
  • Apiculture is derived from the honeybee's Latin name Apis mellifera , meaning ‘honey gatherer’. Since bees do not collect honey but nectar from which honey is made, the scientific name should actually be Apis mellifica meaning ‘honey maker’. Although apiculture refers to the honeybee, the vital role all bees play in the pollination of crops and flowering plants has caused apiculture to also include the management and study of non-Apis bees such as bumblebees and leafcutter bees. Some 90 million years ago, flowering plants first appeared on earth. The wasp-like ancestors of bees took advantage of the food made available by flowers and began to modify their diet and physical characteristics. Since then, flowering plants and bees co-evolved. This eventually led to a complete interdependence, meaning that flowering plants and bees cannot live and reproduce without each other. The genus Apis is comprised of a comparatively small number of species including the western honeybee

Apiculture What is it?
It is something you can do as an extension to your farming activities. It involves keeping bees to get honey and wax as a final product.
What can I earn? (gross, net)
The more the number of bees you keep, the more the quantity of honey produced and hence more the profit.
What is the market for it?
Honey and wax have the potential of being sold at a local haat(market) as well as in the national market because of their demand in the household as well as the industrial sector.
What is required? (raw materials, skills, technology)
A little bit of space, a queen bee and some flowers around.
Your family can run this business.
