CONTACT US Above: Carrie Kissell and Ken Spencer give a tour of the Evans-Deschler Site on the IUPUI campus. Welcome to the IUPUI Department of Anthropology web page. Anthropology is a broadly based discipline that focuses on a vast range of aspects of human culture and biology. We are interested in many different aspects of the human experience across time and space: our faculty research interests include museum studies, human osteology, historical archaeology, and Greek, South Pacific, and Cape Verdean cultures. The IUPUI Anthropology Department focuses on training student to apply anthropological insight to non-academic settings. This means our graduates become practicing anthropologists in such diverse settings as hospitals, state and federal agencies, zoos, museums, archaeological contracting firms, and almost any context in which an understanding of human culture is essential. Many of our students acquire graduate degrees and have been admitted to some of the most competitive graduate programs in the country.

Anthropology Collection Database

Introduction
The permanent research collection of the Department of Anthropology comprises nearly 16,000 objects, most of which are ethnographic. The Department actively collects materials from the indigenous cultures of western North America (exclusive of Mexico) and the Pacific Rim, including all Pacific islands and East Asia. Current strengths of the collection are holdings from the U.S. Southwest and the Pacific Islands, and basketry from California. Earlier years of collecting have yielded both ethnographic and archaeological materials from East Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and Central and South America. The database includes digital images of collection objects. Currently, over 14,000 images are available, with additional images added as they are produced. Digital photographing of the remainder of the collection is an ongoing project.

Anthropology
Anthropology is the study of human beings, in particular the study of their physical character, evolutionary history, racial classification, historical and present-day geographic distribution, group relationships, and cultural history. Anthropology can be characterized as the naturalistic description and interpretation of the diverse peoples of the world. Modern-day anthropology consists of two major divisions: cultural anthropology, which deals with the study of human culture in all its aspects; and physical anthropology, which is the study of human physical character, in both the past and present. Anthropology emerged as an independent science in the late 18th century, it developed two divisions: physical anthropology, which focuses on human Evolution and variation, using methods of Physiology, Anthropometry, Genetics , and Ecology ; and cultural anthropology , which includes Archaeology , Ethnology, Social Anthropology, and Linguistics Cultural Anthropology Cultural anthropology is a major division of anthropology that deals with the study of culture in all its aspects and that uses the methods, concepts, and data of archaeology, ethnography and ethnology, folklore, and linguistics in its descriptions and analyses of the diverse peoples of the world. Modern cultural anthropology as a field of research has its roots in the Age of Discovery, when technologically advanced European cultures came into extended contact with various "traditional" cultures, which for the most part the Europeans grouped indiscriminately under the general rubrics "savage" or "primitive." By the mid-19th century, such questions as the origins of the world's diverse cultures and peoples and their languages had become matters of great interest in western Europe.

The faculty of the Department of Anthropology take pride in offering a four-field program in anthropology with research and teaching in cultural anthropology, prehistoric and historical archaeology, linguistic anthropology, and biological/biocultural anthropology.
A central focus of the Department of Anthropology, and its developing Ph.D. program, is on a broad interpretation of diasporic studies. We encourage intellectual collaboration across the subfields of our discipline on the topic of diasporic studies. We also have a strong emphasis on community-academic research collaboration, and several faculty members and graduate students are engaged in long-term community research partnerships. A majority of our faculty are either developing or have developed research programs that link translocal communities and communities in the U.S.
Our faculty have geographical specialization in Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, North America, Asia and Europe. In addition to a broad focus on diasporic studies, their topical interests include medical anthropology, transcultural identities and processes, political economic anthropology, anthropology of place, visual anthropology, ethnobotany, gender, migration studies, and human/environment interactions. Every faculty member in the Department of Anthropology also participates in at least one interdisciplinary program. There are vibrant interdisciplinary conversations on this campus, and these provide many excellent opportunities for student participation.
