Anthropology is the study of humans and their cultures in the broadest sense. It is the study of humanity, past and present, in all its biological and cultural aspects. Anthropologists study the diversity, origins, and evolution of human and primate culture and behavior, the development of human culture and the processes of culture change, the phenomenon of language, and the structure and meaning of human interaction. Anthropology is unique in its approach to the study of humanity in both the deep span of time and the breadth of aspects of humanity considered, bridging social, biological, and earth sciences and the humanities. Bachelor of Arts in Human Development Advising Links Course Requirements, 2006-2008 Anthropology Major Advising Sheet Of all the human sciences, anthropology is the broadest. Anthropologists study how human beings have come to be as they are, a physically distinct species, communicating through language, adapted to every habitat on earth, and living an amazing variety of lives. As anthropologists have become increasingly engaged with the world of the 1990s, they have led in the development of a global focus on how culturally different peoples interact and how humans change their customary ways of life. Anthropology consists of four (some would say five) subdisciplines:
  • Biological Anthropology deals with the evolution of the human body, mind, and behavior as inferred through study of fossils and comparisons with behavior of other primate species.

Welcome to the Department of Anthropology
This website is an introduction to the department, informing you of the various opportunities we offer and to provide hints to help make your anthropology major or minor a valuable experience. If you have any questions please contact the department. We heartily welcome questions and conversation.
What is Anthropology?
Anthropology is the comparative study of humanity. At its broadest, it seeks to understand the origin and diversification of human adaptations to the natural and social environment. Thus physical anthropologists study the evolution of human anatomy and archeologists study the artifacts left behind by human manipulation of the natural world. But the most complex and diverse products of human activity are the languages, social relations and cultural meanings humans have developed. It is these invisible artifacts that linguistic, cultural and social anthropologists study. The department of Anthropology at the University of Rochester specializes in this aspect of humanity: the comparative study of contemporary human cultures and societies.
