      Plant Cells
Most cells are not visible with the naked eye. However, with microscopes of various types, plant cells can be readily viewed and studied. In young parts of plant and fruits, cell shapes are generally round, while in older sections, the cells are somewhat boxlike with up to 14 sides as they become packed together.
    • The nucleus Ribosomes are the sites where protein molecules are synthesized from amino acids. They are composed of proteins and RNA. Some ribosomes are found bound to granular endoplasmic reticulum, while others are free in the cytoplasm. The proteins synthesized on ribosomes bound to granular endoplasmic reticulum are transferred from the lumen (open space inside endoplasmic reticulum) to the golgi apparatus for secretion outside the cell or distribution to other organelles. The proteins that are synthesized of free ribosomes are released into the cytosol. The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is collectively a network of membranes enclosing a singular continuous space. As mentioned earlier, granular endoplasmic reticulum is associated with ribosomes (giving the exterior surface a rough, or granular appearance). Sometimes granular endoplasmic reticulum is referred to as rough ER. The granular ER is involved in packaging proteins for the golgi apparatus. The agranular, or smooth, ER lacks ribosomes and is the site of lipid synthesis. In addition, the agranular ER stores and releases calcium ions   (Ca

Captive carnivores not up to wild living
Golden lion tamarins A study by the University of Exeter has highlighted the problems of reintroducing animals to the wild for conservation projects. Published online in the journal Biological Conservation, the research highlights the low survival rates of captive carnivores that are released into their natural habitats. On average only one in three captive-born carnivores survives in the wild, with most deaths correlation to human activities.
Recent high-profile conservation projects have involved reintroducing wolves into the Scottish Highlands, bringing red kites back to England and reintroducing golden lion tamarins to Brazil. Most of these animals were born in captivity, with zoos playing a major role in such projects, while other schemes involve moving wild animals to new areas.
This study evaluated 45 case studies, involving 17 carnivore species, and observed that only 30% of captive animals released survived. Over half the deaths were caused by humans in incidents such as shootings and car accidents. The animals were also more susceptible to starvation and disease than their wild counterparts and less able to form successful social groups.
Kristen Jule, lead author on the paper and University of Exeter PhD student, says: Animals in captivity do not commonly have the natural behaviours needed for success in the wild. Their lack of hunting skills and their lack of fear towards humans, for example, are major disadvantages. We have suspected for some time that captive born animals fared less well than wild animals, but here it is finally quantified, and the extent of the problem is critical.........

The field of biology is vast, and there are a huge number of specialties and careers possible. Below we suggest some possible course selections that students might consider to help prepare them for careers in a few areas of biology. This is not an exhaustive list! If you have questions about other interest areas or about modifications to suggested sequences, then please talk to an advisor in the biology department. Whenever possible, the course selections are taken from the recommendations for admission to top graduate or professional schools in that area. However, these suggestions are not designed for any particular program or employer. If a student is interested in a certain employer or graduate/professional program, they should determine the eligibility or admission requirements from them. Historic biology and animal science online
The Special Collections of Wageningen UR Library has a substantial collection of historic literature on biology, books on botany, zoology, entomology etc. from the end of the 16th century till the begining of the 20th century. Illustrated books, image books and wallcharts on these subjects are valuable for research. Some of our old books on biology are made electronically available on the website www.biolib.de by the Max-Planck-Institut für Züchtungsforschung , Cologne, Germany. The Dutch Stichting voor Academisch Erfgoed (SAE, Academic Heritage Society) has restored and digitalized collections of academic wallcharts, among others a part of the collection at Wageningen UR Library. Especially on botany many wallcharts were made in the early twentieth century. A selection is shown on the website Geheugen van Nederland (the Dutch Memory project). You can browse these books and wallcharts on this website but of course it is also possible to visit the Special Collections to study the originals. [ = see catalogue record]
