    • cutting edge research in mechanistic biology related to health and disease training veterinary students participation in various undergraduate and graduate training programs at the University.
Historically, the Department is recognized as one of the strongest basic science Departments in Veterinary Medicine and research conducted in Animal Biology has had a major global impact on experimental biology and medicine. Animal Biology anchors veterinary education within the larger context of one medicine and tightly links the School with the University's biomedical community. The Department has 20 faculty who are members of one of the four laboratories: Two of our faculty are members of the Center for Germ Cell Biology and Transgenesis, located at New Bolton Center, the School's large animal facility 30 miles west of Philadelphia. The research interests of our faculty include mechanisms of oncogenesis, transgenesis, stem cell biology, spermatogenesis, molecular motors, nucleosome structure, cell differentiation, developmental biology, osteogenesis, mitochondrial biogenesis, drug metabolism, behavioral neurobiology, sleep disorders, angiotensin receptor mechanisms, and evolutionary biology. Animal Biology receives about 8 million dollars annually in extramural research funds.

    Introduction
The Animal section of the SEB has a diverse range of interests on whole organism biology, and also includes considerations of the links to cellular process at lower levels of biological organisation, but also associations between physiology, locomotion and behaviour in the context of ecophysiology or ecology. However, the core theme is the biology of the whole organism. The animal section is split into special interest groups from the view point of managing our affairs, but scientifically these boundaries are not fixed, and the groups do share scientific events and interests. The groups include biomechanics, osmoregulation, animal respiration, neurobiology, and animal genomics. The SEB Animal Section has lots to offer. Our meetings offer top quality science, and are organised efficiently by experienced scientists with the support of excellent staff at the SEB HQ in Southampton. Importantly, our meetings are informal and relaxed, so that we can promote debate and discussion. We also recognise the importance of young scientists, these are the future of science, and we must invest in these researchers. We therefore actively seek to involve PhD students, research assistants, and post-docs, as well as the internationally recognised top researchers in each sphere of our activity. New members are always welcome, and any member of the SEB can make suggestions on topics for future meetings. Please forward suggestions to the animal section secretary or one of the group convenors. We are also open to collaborations with special interest groups in other societies, where they can benefit from our broad comparative base, and our long expertise at organising meetings.

A Source Book in Animal Biology
    Thomas S. Hall
The two main aims of this book are to increase the general availability of classical contributions to animal biology and to present the development of thought in this field in the words of those who produced it. The first of these aims is realized by assembling in one volume works previously scattered and, in some cases, rather rare. The second object, that of tracing the principal patterns of development in the field, is made possible through the selection of appropriate materials and the inclusion of brief critical comments indicating the historical position of each work and its author. Course Description
Animal Biology is an ideal course for anyone who aspires to a career in wildlife biology, conservation or education. The course covers diversity of animals, their form and function, how they are adapted to their environment, and how they behave and interact with each other.
This degree route offers a significant opportunity for study using a hands-on practical approach to both laboratory and fieldwork. Most modules have a significant practical component and there are two residential field courses in stage 3. During the first you will study the marine and coastal ecosystems at Millport on the Island of Cumbrae, Scotland, while the second takes you to the Mediterranean Algarve (destination may vary depending on travel restrictions and availability and students will be required to contribute a nominal amount towards the cost of this trip) to study terrestrial animals and their ecosystems. Local field trips are made to a number of sites of outstanding natural beauty and special scientific interest in and around Edinburgh, the Forth Estuary and the Border countryside south of Edinburgh.

Welcome to the website of the Department of Zoology and Animal biology of the faculty of sciences, university of Geneva
This department was founded in 1802, as the 'Institute of zoology' by professors Auguste Pyramus De Candolle and Louis Jurine. For two centuries, the department has been involved in the teaching of fundamental disciplines in life sciences, such as physiology, systematics, endocrinology, genetics and embryology (see the ' '). Nowadays, our department continues to teach a large variety of disciplines, from animal systematics in collaboration with the museum of natural history, to developmental molecular genetics, including molecular phylogeny, protistology and physiology.
