Welcome
The School of Animal Biology was formed in 2002 from the amalgamation of the Departments of Zoology and Animal Science, from the former Faculties of Science and Agriculture. The School continues the traditional strengths of each of these departments in basic and applied animal science, and provides new strengths from the synergy of the two former departments. Our goal is to teach and conduct high quality research in animal biology and animal production at both fundamental and applied levels. The interests of the School’s staff are broad, covering native animal species (vertebrates and invertebrates) and species used in agriculture and aquaculture. Our research strengths are in:
  • evolutionary biology including speciation, systematics, sexual selection, population ecology and animal acoustics; ecology at population and community levels, and in marine and terrestrial environments;

10. Early Animal Evolution
Others have accepted the reality of Cambrian radiation and ascribed it either to causes intrinsic to animal biology or to extrinsic (environmental) triggers

Early Animal Evolution: Emerging Views from Comparative Biology and Geology
Andrew H. Knoll and Sean B. Carroll The Cambrian appearance of fossils representing diverse phyla has long inspired hypotheses about possible genetic or environmental catalysts of early animal evolution. Only recently, however, have data begun to emerge that can resolve the sequence of genetic and morphological innovations, environmental events, and ecological interactions that collectively shaped Cambrian evolution. Assembly of the modern genetic tool kit for development and the initial divergence of major animal clades occurred during the Proterozoic Eon. Crown group morphologies diversified in the Cambrian through changes in the genetic regulatory networks that organize animal ontogeny. Cambrian radiation may have been triggered by environmental perturbation near the Proterozoic-Cambrian boundary and subsequently amplified by ecological interactions within reorganized ecosystems. Animal Biology > What is it?
    Our program in animal biology includes both invertebrate and vertebrate animals. This program addresses three general questions about animals: 1) How do they work (form, function, behavior, physiology, ecology)? 2) How do they develop (gene expression, cell biology, morphogenesis)? and 3) How do they evolve (genetics, diversity, phylogeny)? Students will develop a comprehensive overview of how the different levels of biology relate to one another, from molecules to behaviour, from physiology to ecology. Last Modified: 2007-08-29
