A Celebration of Chemistry's Claim to Fame At a ceremony in the Chemistry Building last Thursday afternoon, the popular place to study known as The Pit was transformed into the new Alumni and Faculty Nobel Hall of Fame. Larger-than-life portraits were unveiled of six Nobelists who have all been affiliated with the Department of Chemistry over the past several decades. Almanac October 17, 2000 cum laude ) in Chemistry in 1964 and his M.D. at Penn in 1968. The late Dr. Christian B. Anfinsen, winner of the 1972 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, took his M.S. in Chemistry in 1939 before going on for his Ph.D. at Harvard. Dr. Ahmed H. Zewail, the 1999 Nobelist in Chemistry, took his Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1974 under the tutelage of Dr. Robin Hochstrasser. President Judith Rodin payed homage to the "six extraordinary scientists" who had the "courage to push ahead with difficult experiments, even against stiff resistance from an often skeptical scientific community." The Nobelist who recently received the Order of New ZealandSir Alan MacDiarmid addressed all of those gathered as "fellow students" saying that "we are all learning; when you stop learning, you start dying." He said that this event is not only a recognition of the six persons, and the chemistry department, but also Penn's administration. "Science is people," he stressed, adding "first class faculty attract first class students." Although this is his 46th year on the Penn faculty, last semester Dr. MacDiarmid graciously taught a freshman seminar, said Dean Preston.

Year Winner Country* Achievement Hoff van't , Jacobus H Netherlands for work on rates of reaction, chemical equilibrium, and osmotic pressure Fischer, Emil Germany Fischer's research on the purines was instituted in 1881. He determined the structures of uric acid, xanthine, caffeine, theobromine, and other related compounds, and he showed that they are all derivatives of a single compound, a nitrogenous base that he named purine. Despite major complications because of stereochemical relations, Fischer was able to use these derivatives to determine the molecular structures of fructose, glucose, and many other sugars, and he was able to verify his results by synthesizing those compounds. He also showed how to distinguish the formulas of the 16 stereoisometric glucoses. In the course of his stereochemical research, Fischer discovered that there are two series of sugars, the D sugars and the L sugars, that are mirror images of each other. His study of sugars led him to investigate the reactions and substances involved in fermentation, and, in his investigations of how enzymes break down sugars, Fischer laid the foundations for enzyme chemistry. American biochemist who, with Stanford Moore and William H. Stein , received the 1972 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for research on the shape and primary structure of ribonuclease (the enzyme that hydrolyses RNA). Ribonuclease is made up of a single peptide (a molecule consisting of two or more amino acid molecules joined by a peptide bond) chain folded into a sphere bound together by four disulphide bonds. These bonds can be broken down so that the enzyme becomes denatured (collapses), losing all of its enzyme properties. Anfinsen found that its shape and consequently its enzymatic power could be restored, and concluded that ribonuclease must retain all of the information about its configuration within its amino acids.

Born 26 Mar 1913; died 20 Sep 1996.
Hungarian mathematician , who was one of the century's top math experts and pioneered the fields of number theory and combinatorics. The type of mathematics he worked on were beautiful problems that were simple to understand, but notoriously difficult to solve. At age 20, he discovered a proof for a classic theorem of number theory that states that there is always at least one prime number between any positive integer and its double. In the 1930s, he studied in England and moved to the USA by the late 1930s when his Jewish origins made a return to Hungary impossible. Affected by McCarthyism in the 1950s, he spent much of the next ten years in Israel. Writing his many hundreds of papers made him one of history's most prolific mathematicians.

This list was compiled mainly for the student researchers in the Illinois Bio-Grid ( http://www.illinoigbiogrid.org ), but may be useful to others. For more information, contact Dave Angulo at Materials in bold are "Must Read" materials. "Must Read" does not mean front to back reading but rather these readings are important and you will want to be aware of what information they contain. Also, if you are involved with a project under a specific topic, it is benficial to read most of the "Must Read" material under that topic.
