Stein. This group shared the prize for research into the fundamental chemistry of enzymes (natural substances that speed up chemical reactions in all living things). All three scientists worked with an enzyme called ribonuclease. Anfinsen won half of the prize for his discovery of the relationship between the structure and function of ribonuclease. See Enzyme

Biographical Note
Christian Boehmer Anfinsen, Jr., was born 26 March 1916 in Monessen, Pennsylvania, a small town south of Pittsburgh. His father, Christian Boehmer Anfinsen, Sr., was a mechanical engineer; both he and his wife, Sophie Rasmussen Anfinsen, were Norwegian immigrants who taught their children the Norwegian language and heritage. After living for several years in the Pennsylvania town of Charleroi, the family moved to Philadelphia in the 1920s. In 1933, Anfinsen was admitted to Swarthmore College on a scholarship, where he studied chemistry and played football while working as a waiter in the dining hall. The 1937 edition of the

Johns Hopkins University 901 South Bond Street, Suite 540 Baltimore, Maryland 21231 May 30, 2006 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Lisa De Nike lde@jhu.edu Frederic M. Richards to Speak at Johns Hopkins Lecture is part of Pioneers in Biology series Frederic M. Richards, a retired Yale biophysicist best known for his contributions to the understanding of protein folding, will give the 2006 Christian B. Anfinsen Lecture at The Johns Hopkins University at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 1. The lecture will take place in the auditorium of Mudd Hall on the university's Homewood campus at 3400 N. Charles Street. Part of the Pioneers in Biology Series, the hour- long lecture is free and open to the public and will be followed by a reception. Now Sterling Professor Emeritus of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry at Yale University, Richards' work has informed protein chemistry for more than half a century. Early in his career, he developed a soon-to-become famous protein system, Ribonuclease S, which became a microcosm for understanding proteins, from their self- assembly and energetics to molecular recognition. He also pioneered the use of surface area and volume in the understanding of protein folding and worked extensively on soluble proteins.

Darwin's Vision and Christian Perspectives. Edited by Walter J. Ong, S.J. New York: The Macmillan Co. 1960. Reviewed by R. L. Mixter, Professor of Zoology, Wheaton College, Wheaton, Illinois. The Roman Catholic Church has analyzed its beliefs regarding evolution in this volume by professors at Fordam and St. Louis Universities. The impacts upon biology, philosophy, American economic history, and theology are noted from Darwin's time until the present. In the introduction, Walter Ong comments that "evolution is a term which can still disconcert or hypnotize" but the authors conclude that all the transformations which the biological evolutionists have indicated may be accepted if one believes that "human souls are immediately created by God." "If we accept the fact that the human came into being at the end of a series of sudden mutations directed to this end by the Creator God, then these changes reveal God's providence throughout." Alexander Wolsky mentions that biologists face a new difficulty: "a certain complacent belief that owing to the neo-Darwinian synthesis evolutionary biology has solved its main problems and that all that remains to be done is to work out a few minor details" but he is confident that this attitude will pass as new research is done.

This should be controversial
The idea that primary sequence alone determines tertiary structure in protein folding should be a controversial idea. "a beautiful example of how an entirely acceptable conclusion can be reached that is entirely wrong because of the paucity of knowledge at that particular time. I spent the following 15 years or so completely disproving the conclusions reached in this communication." Christian B. Anfinsen
Comment made in 1989 regarding earlier work on the structure of RNase There is no doubt that Christian Anfinsen was a great contributor to the body of scientific knowledge. His main contribution was in the field of protein folding, and within that field one particular conclusion sticks out: Primary sequence determines tertiary structure . For this conclusion in 1954 Anfinsen shared a Nobel prize in 1972. The origin of the idea, 'the thermodynamic hypothesis of protein folding,' can be glimpsed at the end of the famous 1954 paper: This hypothesis should still be controversial. Where is the evidence to support the radical conclusions that were subsequently made?
