Christian B. Anfinsen From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Christian B. Anfinsen in 1969 Dr. Christian Boehmer Anfinsen, Jr. March 26 May 14 ) was a biochemist and a Nobel Prize winner for work on ribonuclease , especially concerning the connection between the amino acid sequence and the biologically active conformation (see Anfinsen's dogma Anfinsen was born in Monessen, Pennsylvania to a Norwegian American family. He earned a bachelor's degree from Swarthmore College in 1937, a master's degree in organic chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania in 1939, and in 1943 a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Harvard Medical School . While attending Swarthmore College he joined the Delta Upsilon Fraternity. Anfinsen stayed at Harvard as an assistant professor until 1950, when he began working for the National Institute of Health , where he spent most of his career, until 1981. From 1982 until his death in 1995, Anfinsen was professor of biology at Johns Hopkins In 1961 he showed that ribonuclease could be refolded after denaturation while preserving enzyme activity, thereby suggesting that all the information required by protein to adopt its final conformation is encoded in its primary structure He converted to Orthodox Judaism by going through the giur -process.

This discovery was a major contribution to the scientific understanding of the nature of enzymes. For this achievement, Anfinsen shared the 1972 Nobel Prize for Chemistry with the research team of Stanford Moore and William Howard Stein. Anfinsen was born on March 26, 1916, in Monessen, Pennsylvania. He was the child of Christian Anfinsen, an engineer and emigrant from Norway, and Sophie Rasmussen, who was also of Norwegian heritage. Anfinsen earned his B.A. from Swarthmore College in 1937. Subsequently, he attended the University of Pennsylvania, earning an M.S. in organic chemistry in 1939. After earning his master's degree, Anfinsen received a fellowship from the American Scandinavian Foundation to spend a year at the Carlsberg Laboratory in Copenhagen, Denmark. Upon his return in 1940, he entered Harvard University's Ph.D. program in biochemistry. His doctoral dissertation involved work with enzymes; he described various methodologies for discerning the enzymes present in the retina of the eye, and he earned his Ph.D in 1943.

Prize in Economics Christian Anfinsen The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1972 Biography In Anfinsen's early work, he and Steinberg studied the non-uniform labelling in newly synthesized proteins - a technique which later permitted Dintzis, Canfield and others to determine that proteins are synthesized sequentially from the amino-terminal and in vivo , and to calculate the rate at which amino acids are polymerized. In the mid 1950's Anfinsen began to concentrate on the problem of the relationship between structure and function in enzymes. On the basis of studies on ribonuclease with Sela and White, he proposed that the information determining the tertiary structure of a protein resides in the chemistry of its amino acid sequence. Investigations on reversible denaturation of several proteins served to verify this proposal experimentally. It was demonstrated that, after cleavage of disulfide bonds and disruption of tertiary structure, many proteins could spontaneously refold to their native forms. This work resulted in general acceptance of the "thermodynamic hypothesis". Studies on the rate and extent of renaturation in vitro led to the discovery of a microsomal enzyme which catalyzes sulfhydryl-disulfide interchange and thereby accelerates

Anfinsen, Christian B. Born in Monessen, Pennsylvania, March 26, 1916. Dr. Anfinsen obtained a B.A. degree from Swarthmore College in 1937 and an M.S. in organic chemistry in 1939 from the University of Pennsylvania. He spent the year 1939-40 as a Visiting Investigator at the Carlsberg Laboratory in Copenhagec. In 1943, he received a Ph.D. from Harvard Medical School in biochemistry and spent the next seven years at Harvard Medical School; first as Instructor and then as Assistant Professor of Biological Chemistry. During this time, he spent a year (1947-48) as a Senior Fellow of the American Cancer Society working with Dr. Hugo Theorell at the Medical Nobel Institute. Dr. Anfinsen left Harvard in 1950 to become Chief of the Laboratory of Cellular Physiology and Metaolism in the National Heart Institute of the National Institutes of Health. He was again at Harvard Medical School as Professor of Biological Chemistry in 1962-63 and then returned to the National Institutes of Health to assume his present position. Stein Born in Monessen, Pennsylvania, Anfinsen studied at Swarthmore College and the University of Pennsylvania and received his Ph.D. degree in biochemistry from Harvard Medical School in 1943.
