Krista Thomas Graduate Students Erin Doucet John Ku Guest Workers Ruth Perez Our current research focuses on the development and validation of analytical methods for toxins in plankton and seafood, and on the preparation of toxin calibration standards and reference materials for distribution through the Certified Reference Materials Program Our lab works closely with other government agencies and industry to protect consumers and the aquaculture industry from the effects of shellfish poisoning. Due to 18 years of research by NRC-IMB researchers, it is now possible to monitor every known marine toxin. Our methods and reference materials are the foundation for monitoring programs around the world. We also work with industry to develop and validate rapid assay methods for toxins and to develop early warning systems that can protect the industry. When a new toxin appears in the food system, NRC-IMB can rapidly mobilize an inter-disciplinary response team to isolate and identify the toxin. Isolation of pure compounds from natural sources such as shellfish or plankton is fundamental to the NRC-IMB Natural Toxins Program. Following the identification of a new toxin, it is necessary to determine the source of the toxin and develop analytical methods. Analytical chemistry often plays a lead role in such operations.
