(December 2006) For the journal, see Analytical Chemistry (journal) Analytical chemistry is the study of the chemical composition of natural and artificial materials . Unlike other major sub disciplines of chemistry such as inorganic chemistry and organic chemistry , analytical chemistry is not restricted to any particular type of chemical compound or reaction . Properties studied in analytical chemistry include geometric features such as molecular morphologies and distributions of species, as well as features such as composition and species identity. The contributions made by analytical chemists have played critical roles in the sciences ranging from the development of concepts and theories ( pure science ) to a variety of practical applications, such as biomedical applications, environmental monitoring

NIST provides a comprehensive set of easy-to-use databases and online systems that help the analytical chemist identify unknown materials and obtain physical, chemical, and spectroscopic data about known substances. The databases marked with an * have been fully evaluated using a variety of techniques. When appropriate, duplicate measurements have been included for completeness. The databases and online systems are updated and expanded on a regular basis. The PC databases have sophisticated software that enables searching which takes only seconds. Highlights The NIST/EPA/NIH Mass Spectral Library is the product of a multiyear, comprehensive evaluation and expansion of the world's more widely used mass spectral reference library. The database now includes 147,198 compounds with spectra. Click here for a list of our distributors of this high-quality, evaluated product.

These techniques are used in analysing the chemical composition of substances. Chemical analysis may be qualitative or quantitative. Qualitative analysis involves attempting to identify what materials are present in a sample. Answering the question: "What is it?". Quantitative analysis involves determining how much of a material is present in a sample. Answering the question: "How much is present?".
Modern analytical methods make it possible to identify hundreds of components in a single sample and to detect specific substances present in less than one part per million.
American Organization of Analytical Chemists International

AOAC INTERNATIONAL is a 120 year-old not-for-profit scientific association committed to worldwide confidence in analytical results. In fact, "worldwide confidence in analytical results" is AOAC's vision. An AOAC community is a group of analytical scientists in a specific area who share AOAC's vision of worldwide confidence in analytical results and who are brought together by a leader or "champion" to do together what they cannot do alone. Representatives of a community include scientific experts from various government agencies, industry, trade associations, international organizations, and academia.
