Loading logo ... Loading menu ... Loading menu bottom ... Welcome to Jarek's Amateur Astronomy Site I have been interested in astronomy and astrophysics since my middle school days, but I wasn't observing anything until relatively recently. Observing supplements my "theoretical" interest in astronomy - it would not be so much interesting if I didn't know some about the things I see, and on the other hand seeing adds a "personal touch" to knowledge. I own five telescopes at present - one small 4.5" Dobsonian from Orion (SkyQuest 4.5), bigger 10" Dobsonian from Antares (XL10), 80mm ED Celestron refractor (C80ED - it rides on CGE1400), 14" Celestron SCT (CGE1400 XLT Fastar) and Coronado Personal Solar Telescope (PST). Until recently I also owned a 9.25" SCT from Celestron (C9.25S-GT XLT), but I have sold it on Astromart after I bought CGE1400. Both are great and worked very well for me so far. In Ithaca, NY I started with 4.5" Dobsonian, then moved up to 9.25" SCT, then added 80mm piggyback refractor and I was quite happy until I got aperture fever again ... That urge to have bigger and bigger and bigger telescope! I bet you know it very well :-). I had to buy 14" SCT, and so I did, and I am very happy with it. CGE1400 is a great scope, wonderful optics, excellent mount! It performs very well for visual, with good pointing accuracy. Many say that C14+C80ED would be too heavy for CGE mount for astrophotography, but for me it works very well in this aspect too. Coronado PST opened a new area of Solar observing for me, it is a fantastic little scope.

Binoculars and telescopes and other astronomy equipment and accessories are the meat and potatoes of amateur astronomy. A good pair of binoculars is what introduced me to the pleasures of stargazing many moons ago and only after a couple of years scanning the skies did I graduate to a telescope. That was one of the department store 60mm telescopes we're all warned about, but my folks didn't know any better, and to a 12-year old kid, it opened up the universe. Telescopes
While cheap (in every sense of the word) telescopes are still to be found, recent years have seen the introduction of small but very affordable telescopes from manufacturers such as Meade and Celestron and, despite their small size, these telescopes have excellent optics that far outperform the cheap optics in my old 60mm scope from so long ago. Many of these small telescopes now come with GOTO features that allow you to select an object to view from an attached handset and the telescope will automatically slew to that feature in the sky. What the ads tend to forget to mention is that in order to use this facility, the telescope must be correctly set up and aligned beforehand. Many scopes, unfortunately, lie gathering dust in corners and wardrobes because their owners couldn't figure out how to use the thing. It's not their fault - better, and simpler, instructions should be supplied with the telescopes. But for those who can work with such an instrument, a wealth of celestial objects are available for viewing that would be quite difficult to find otherwise.

What type of stuff can I find here?
The Astronomical Data Center specializes in archiving and distributing collections of data that have been published by professional astronomers. Most of these data sets are in the form of computer-readable tables of numbers, rather than images. Amateur astronomers can find these data collections useful in looking up the properties and locations of celestial objects. This can help amateurs plan for observing sessions, and help them to better understand what they've observed. Please see our

Strutting around the lawn of the Vedanta monastery in Hollywood, California, John Dobson, cracks the whip on a rag-tag assembly of wannabe astronomers who are grinding their slabs of glass into the shape of a telescope mirror. Grey ponytail wagging, he swaggers around the group. His ratty clothes mask sophistication while he genuinely wants everyone to do his or her best, in his eyes no one is grinding quite right. "He's my guru." Dobson helps acolyte Durga Pobre shape a lens. Having taught the craft for over 30 years, Dobson, 84, admits his patience is wearing thin. "No, not like that," he barks at one young boy. "Longer strokes! Longer strokes!" A group of 20 or so have assembled at the spiritual enclave of the Vedanta society a religious order of chaste monks and nuns who believe in a religion inspired by Hinduism to learn the art of building cheap and powerful telescopes. "He's my guru," said Durga Pobre, a retired real-estate saleswoman taking the class. "I love the stars. I love the sky. It's like giving birth to a telescope."

Examples of small observatories that individual amateur astronomers have built for personal use. I started this list when doing research before building my own observatory . I got a lot of good ideas by looking at what others had done. Perhaps you will, too :-) Building a small observatory is not all that hard. A simple roll-off roof design can be built in a few days with simple tools and materials easily available in your local building supply store. A dome is much more complicated but still can be done with more careful planning. Or you can buy a kit. Note: New entries are marked with an asterisk Hardcopy More Small Astronomical Observatories

Have you been to a planetarium lately? Planetariums are increasingly going digital, replacing those quaint sky tours of our elementary school field trips with slick productions that blend art and science into fantastic tours of the universe. In this hour of Science Friday we'll take a look at the new planetarium shows. Plus, how to look at the real night sky, how amateur astronomers are contributing to the science...and some tips on buying telescopes. What is amateur astronomy? It's looking up and enjoying the beauty of the night sky. It's making sketches of the craters of the moon. It's learning how to pronounce the names of stars and constellations. It's observing one object night after night to see miniscule changes. There are many aspects that make up amateur astronomy. We've tried to include some material that local amateurs and those wanting to get into astronomy might find useful in this section. Watch for announcements and updates of programs as well as interesting things that might be happening in the sky.

We give little thoughts to the machinery that generates the sunlight that makes life possible , to the gravity that glues us to an earth that would otherwise send us spinning off into space, or to the atoms of which we are made and we fundamentally depend.
