The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1989
Autobiography
I was born in Montreal in 1939, the second son of poor immigrants. My mother worked in a textile mill and my father in a grocery store before they met and married. It was from them that I learned that hard work in stable surroundings could yield rewards, even if only in infinitesimally small increments.
For our immediate family and relatives, Canada was a land of opportunity. However, it was made clear to the first generation of Canadian-born children that the path to opportunity was through education. No sacrifice was too great to forward our education and, fortunately, books and the tradition of study were not unknown in our family.
I am conscious of two events that sparked my early interest in science, the first being the appearance of the A-bomb. The mystique associated with the bomb, the role that scientists played in it, and its general importance could not fail to impress even a six-year old. About seven years later I was given a book about the periodic table of the elements. For the first time I saw the elegance of scientific theory and its predictive power. I should mention that while I was growing up, Einstein was presented as a worthy role model for a young boy who was good at his studies. I added various writers of fiction and stars of ice hockey and baseball to my pantheon.

Born in Montreal, Canada, on May 8, 1939. Studied physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in 1960. After two years at Columbia he moved to the University of Colorado Medical Center, from which he received his Ph. D. in Biophysics. Postdoctoral studies at Harvard, then in Cambridge, where he began research which resulted in the discovery of the catalytic properties of RNS, which later earned him the Nobel Prize. Went to the Department of Biology of Yale University in 1971, where he was made professor in 1981. Department head 1983-85, then Dean of Yale College until 1989, when he resumed research as Sterling Professor of Biology.
Altman shared the 1989 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with the American Thomas Cech of the University of Colorado, which was awarded to them for having discovered, independently of one another, "that nucleic acids not only carry genetic information but can also act as biocatalysts" - an unexpected discovery which not only changed our basic understanding of life processes at molecular level but also paved the way for developing new forms of defences against viral infections based on genetic engineering.

Canadian-born US biochemist who shared the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1989 with Thomas Cech for his research on the catalytic activities of RNA (the nucleic acid involved in translating DNA into proteins). Altman studied ribonuclease-P, an enzyme that catalyses the depolymerization (decoupling of molecules) of RNA in the formation of transfer RNA ( t RNA). Ribonuclease-P is comprised of RNA and a protein. Altman showed that the RNA component is all that is required to catalyse the formation of t RNA with the protein playing no part in this process. hut(1)

Eight months later, having left Columbia, I was studying physics in a summer program and working in Colorado when I decided to enroll as a graduate student in biophysics.
