Sidney Altman received his Nobel Prize for discovering the catalytic properties of the ribozyme RNase P . RNase P is a ribonucleoprotein particle consisting of both a structural RNA molecule and one (in prokaryotes ) or more (in eukaryotes proteins . Originally, it was believed that, in the bacterial RNase P complex, the protein subunit was responsible for the catalytic activity of the complex, which is involved in the maturation of tRNAs. During experiments in which the complex was

http://ca.geocities.com/hfrcde_1313/altman-autobio.html
I was born in Montreal in 1939, the second son of poor immigrants. My mother worked in a textile mill and my father in a grocery store before they met and married. It was from them that I learned that hard work in stable surroundings could yield rewards, even if only in infinitesimally small increments.
For our immediate family and relatives, Canada was a land of opportunity. However, it was made clear to the first generation of Canadian-born children that Altman Sidney sons Autobiography mom - and the path to opportunity was through education. No sacrifice was too great to forward our education and, fortunately, books and the tradition of study were not unknown in our family.
I am conscious of two events that sparked my early interest in science, the first being the appearance of the A-bomb. The mystique associated with the bomb, the role that scientists played in it, and its general importance could not fail to impress even a six-year old. About seven years later I was given a book about the periodic table of the elements. For the first time I saw the elegance of scientific theory and its predictive power. I should mention that while I was growing up, Einstein was presented as a worthy role model for a young boy who was good at his studies. I added various writers of fiction and stars of ice hockey and baseball to my pantheon.
By the time I reached high school my father's grocery store had made our life adequately comfortable and I was able to choose, without any practical encumbrances, the subjects that I wanted to pursue in college. My intention was to enroll at McGill University but an unexpected series of events led me to study physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. There I experienced four years of over-stimulation among brilliant, arrogant and zany peers and outstanding teachers. Lee Grodzins supervised my senior thesis in nuclear physics and provided me with a wonderful research experience and with his friendship. During my final semester at MIT, I took a short introductory course in molecular biology to find out what all the excitement was about. That course, taught by Cyrus Levinthal, familiarized me with nucleic acids and molecular genetics and prepared me for future encounters with these topics.

Encyclopedia of World Biography on Sidney Altman Research by molecular biologist Sidney Altman (born 1939) has helped unravel many of the mysteries surrounding deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), the chemical at the heart of the cells of all living things that controls their structure and purpose. For their discoveryin independently conducted studiesthat ribonucleic acid (RNA) serves not only as a transmitter of genetic information but also acts as an agent of change in living cells, Altman and Thomas R. Cech in 1989 were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Showed an Early Interest in Science Made an Important Discovery Altman stayed on for another year at Brenner and Crick's lab, before returning to the United States in 1971 to accept a post as an assistant professor in Yale University's biology department. A year later, he married Ann Korner, with whom he had two children, Daniel and Leah. In 1975 Altman was promoted to associate professor at Yale. Three years later he attracted wide attention in molecular biology circles when he published the results of an experiment conducted by one of his graduate students. The experiment demonstrated that the RNase P enzyme was at least partially made up of RNA, which meant that RNA played an integral role in the enzyme's activity. This finding contradicted the widely held belief among molecular biologists that enzymes were made up of protein, not nucleic acids.

Sidney Altman was born in 1939 in Montreal. His parents were not wealthy but they did instill in the Altman children the need to further their lives through a solid education. Later in life, his father was able to provide a more substantial financial means for his family which enabled Sidney to pursue the educational endeavors that he wanted. Sidney Altman has achieved a status that few will ever achieve. He is a Sterling Professor in molecular biology at Yale University, a symbol that further proves that Altman is truly one of the best in his field. A Nobel Prize winner, Altman earned the award for his discovery of catalytic properties of ribozyme RNase P. He shared the Nobel Prize with Thomas R. Cech. Sidney Altman is a member of Scientists and Engineers for America. He serves on the board of advisors and supports the efforts of those who have a clear understanding of science in the American government.

Sidney Altman
Sidney Altman
Canadian-American molecular biologist who, with Thomas R. Cech , received the 1989 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for their discoveries concerning RNA, or ribonucleic acid.
Altman attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (B.S., 1960, in physics) and the University of Colorado (Ph.D., 1967, in biophysics). He was a molecular biology fellow at Harvard University (1967-69) and at the University of Cambridge (1969-70) before joining the biology faculty at Yale University in 1971. He became a full professor at Yale in 1980, was the department chairman from 1983 to 1985, and served as dean of the undergraduate Yale College from 1985 to 1989. He took U.S. citizenship in 1984 but concurrently retained his Canadian citizenship. Working independently, Altman and Cech discovered a new role for RNA. The old belief was that enzymatic activitythe triggering and acceleration of vital chemical reactions within living cellswas the exclusive domain of protein molecules. Altman's and Cech's revolutionary discovery was that RNA, traditionally thought to be simply a passive carrier of genetic codes between different parts of the living cell, could also take on active enzymatic functions. This new knowledge opened up new fields of scientific research and biotechnology and caused scientists to rethink old theories of how cells function.
