Biography
Kurt Alder
He started reading chemistry at Berlin University in 1922, and later continued these studies at Kiel, where he obtained his degree of Ph.D. in 1926. The thesis for the doctorate, on which Alder worked under O. Diels, was entitled: (On the causes of the azoester reaction).
In 1930 Alder was appointed reader for chemistry by the Faculty of Philosophy at Kiel University; promotion to lecturer followed in 1934. Alder left Kiel in 1936 to take up the appointment as head of department in the science laboratories of the I. G. Farben-Industrie, at their works in Leverkusen, where he worked on the preparation and constitution of synthetic rubber ("Buna"). By this work some of his earlier interests were reawakened and stimulated.
In 1940 Alder was appointed to the Chair for Experimental Chemistry and Chemical Technology at Cologne University and also became Principal of the Institute of Chemistry. He received invitations from Berlin University in 1944 and from the University of Marburg in 1950, but declined both.
As early as 1927-1928, whilst at Kiel, Alder had studied problems of systematic organic chemistry in collaboration with his teacher O. Diels, and this lead to their joint discovery of the principle of the diene-synthesis, which they investigated and determined in all its aspects. At the same time Alder also worked in collaboration with younger colleagues on extensive stereochemical investigations, prompted by selection phenomena during organic chemical reactions, particularly in unsaturated systems. A series of other problems, such as the behaviour of double bonds in stressed carbon rings and the phenomena of intermolecular rearrangements, were investigated.

... Nobel Prize for Chemistry Kurt Alder 10 July 20 June ) was a German chemist who won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry jointly with Otto Paul Hermann Diels in 1950. Alder was born in the industrial area of K¶nigsh¼tte in Upper Silesia , where he received his early schooling. Forced to leave the area for political reasons (that part of Germany became a part of Poland ) after the First World War , he studied chemistry at the University of Berlin from 1922, and later at the University of Kiel where his PhD was awarded in 1926 for work supervised by Diels. In 1930 Alder was appointed reader for chemistry at Kiel, and promoted to lecturer in 1934. In 1936 he left Kiel to join I G Farben Industrie at Leverkusen , where he worked on synthetic rubber. Then in 1940 he was appointed Professor of Experimental Chemistry and Chemical Technology at the University of Cologne and Director of the Institute of Chemistry there. Throughout this time and despite the many obstacles to original research in Europe at the time, he continued a systematic program of investigations of his particular interests in the synthesis of organic compounds. In all he published more than 150 papers in this field.

Kurt Alder German chemist

died June 20, 1958, Cologne, W.Ger. German chemist who was the corecipient, with the German organic chemist Otto Diels , of the 1950 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for their development of the Diels-Alder reaction , or diene synthesis, a widely used method of synthesizing cyclic organic compounds. Alder studied chemistry at the University of Berlin and then at the University of Kiel in Germany, where he received his doctorate in 1926. In 1928 Alder and Diels discovered, and published a paper on, the reaction of dienes with quinones . The Diels-Alder reaction consists essentially of the linking of a diene, which is a substance containing two alternate double molecular bonds, to a dienophile, which is a compound containing a pair of doubly or triply bonded carbon atoms. The diene and dienophile readily react to form a six-membered ring compound. Similar reactions had been recorded by others, but Alder and Diels provided the first experimental proof of the nature of the reaction and demonstrated its application to the synthesis of a wide range of ring compounds. Diene synthesis can be effected without the use of powerful chemical reagents. It has been used to synthesize such complex molecules as morphine reserpine cortisone , and other steroids , the insecticides dieldrin and aldrin , and other alkaloids and polymers Alder was a professor of chemistry at the University of Kiel from 1934 to 1936. He applied his fundamental research to the development of

16. Alder, Kurt
German organic chemist who with Otto Diels developed the diene synthesis, a fundamental process that has become known as the Dielsalder reaction.
http://www.cartage.org.lb/en/themes/biographies/MainBiographies/A/Alder/1.html
Alder, Kurt
German organic chemist who with Otto Diels
Alder was director of the Chemical Institute at the University of Cologne from 1940.
The first report of the diene synthesis was made in 1928.
The Diels-Alder reaction involves the adding of an organic compound that has two double bonds separated by a single bond (called a conjugated diene) to a compound with only one, activated double bond (termed a dienophile). The reaction is equally general with respect to dienophiles, provided that their double bonds are activated by a nearby group such as carboxyl, carbonyl, cyano, nitro, or ester. Many of the compounds studied were prepared for the first time in Alder's laboratory.
The diene synthesis stimulated and made easier the understanding of this important group of natural products.
The ease with which the reaction takes place suggests that it may be the natural biosynthetic pathway.
