Meetings Draft 2006 Regional SO2 Emissions and Milestone Report This report determines whether or not average adjusted sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions from 2004, 2005, and 2006, emitted by large industrial sources, exceed the 2006 SO2 emission milestone set in the Regional Haze State Implementation Plans for Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. These states submitted regional haze plans and cooperated in the development of this draft report. The draft report shows that the adjusted emissions total of SO2 from large industrial sources in the four states in 2006 were 279,134 tons, which was lower than the 2005 adjusted emissions total of 288,040 tons. The average of 2004, 2005, and 2006 adjusted emissions is 295,740 tons. Based on this average adjusted annual emissions estimate, a preliminary determination has been made that the four states have met the 2006 regional SO2 milestone of 420,194 tons. IAQ generally refers to the quality of the air in an office environment. Other terms related to IAQ include indoor environmental quality (IEQ) and "sick building syndrome" (SBS).
Complaints about IAQ range from simple complaints, such as the air smelling odd, to more complex, where the air quality causes illness and lost work time. It may not be easy to identify a single reason for IAQ complaints because of the number and variety of possible sources, causes, and varying individual sensitivities.

Welcome to Air Pollution: What's the Solution? an educational project for students, grades 6 - 12, that uses online real time data to guide student discovery of the science behind the causes and effects of outdoor air pollution. Through this project, students will focus on outdoor air pollution; what it is, what factors contribute to its formation and the health effects from breathing polluted air. Students will use data and animated maps from the Internet and monitor for the presence of air pollution. Students are challenged to think critically and creatively about the problems surrounding air pollution. By the end of this project, students will be able to:
  • Describe what air pollutants are, when and how outdoor air pollution is formed, and what the health effects are from breathing polluted air. Read the Environmental Protection Agency's Air Quality Index (AQI) chart, record weather data, and determine the presence of air pollutants. Create graphs to help visualize or recognize trends. Predict when ground level ozone may occur.

Air Quality Forecast and Agricultural Burn Status
We have good days. We have bad days. Our air, too, has its ups and downs. Over the years, though, the Ventura County Air Pollution Control District has made positive strides in improving our air quality, even with a jump in population growth. Still our air exceeds both the state and federal air quality standards for ozone and the state standard for particulate matter. Where does air pollution come from? Emissions from motor vehicles, for example, account for more than half of Ventura County's air pollution. Other pollution sources include business, industry, agriculture, fires, and household products.

Acid Rain
In this interdisciplinary Web research project, junior high students use the Web to research information in the field of a chosen specialist, compile and analyse the data, meet with each other, and then write a report on their findings. The basic questions that they address are: What is acid rain? How does it affect the environment (and us)? Where does it come from? How can it be prevented or minimized? They may choose to be a specialist in chemistry, economics, history, environment, health, or politics/government. Each specialist is given a set of Web links to begin the research.

Air Quality Index (AQI)? The AQI is an index for reporting daily air quality. It tells you how clean or polluted your air is, and what associated health concerns you should be aware of. The AQI focuses on health effects that can happen within a few hours or days after breathing polluted air. EPA uses the AQI for five major air pollutants regulated by the Clean Air Act: ground-level ozone, particulate matter, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide. For each of these pollutants, EPA has established national air quality standards to protect against harmful health. For more information on the Air Quality Index, view EPA's

    Mission
The primary responsibility of the Air Quality Management Division is to achieve and maintain the National Ambient Air Quality Standards in Knox County, for all criteria pollutants designed to protect health and welfare, as set by local and federal law.
This is accomplished through the following activities: the continuous monitoring of the ambient air to determine air quality levels; issuance of health alerts concerning air quality; permitting of industrial air contaminant sources; review of industrial source testing, computer modeling of air pollution dispersion; and air toxics evaluation and control. The department also performs compliance and complaint investigations, issues residential open burning permits and provides technical and educational services.
