Air Quality Index
The Air Quality Index (AQI) is a color-coded tool which shows air pollution levels. Green is good, yellow is moderate, orange is unhealthy for sensitive groups, and red is unhealthy for all groups. DEQ issues Air Pollution Advisories when we forecast air pollution levels above the yellow, or moderate, AQI category and remain there for more than 72 hours. The AQI for particulate matter (both PM and PM ) is based on the average of the previous 24 hours of pollution levels. Particle pollution is often highest during the coldest times of the day, typically in the evening and early morning.

Air quality guidelines - global update 2005
Clean air is considered to be a basic requirement of human health and well-being. However, air pollution continues to pose a significant threat to health worldwide. According to a WHO assess¬ment of the burden of disease due to air pollution, more than 2 million premature deaths each year can be attributed to the effects of urban outdoor air pollution and indoor air pollution (caused by the burning of solid fuels). More than half of this disease burden is borne by the populations of developing countries. Air quality guidelines have been published by WHO in 1987 and they were revised in 1997. Given the wealth of new studies on the health effects of air pollution that have been published in the scientific literature since the completion of the second edi¬tion of the Air quality Guidelines for Europe, includ¬ing important new research from low-and middle-income countries where air pollution levels are at their highest, WHO has undertaken to review the accumulated scientific evidence and to consider its implications for its air quality guidelines. The result of this work is presented in this document in the form of revised guideline values for selected air pollutants, which are applicable across all WHO regions.

National Ambient Air Quality Standards The Clean Air Act, which was last amended in 1990, requires EPA to set National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for wide-spread pollutants from numerous and diverse sources considered harmful to public health and the environment. The Clean Air Act established two types of national air quality standards. Primary standards set limits to protect public health, including the health of "sensitive" populations such as asthmatics, children, and the elderly. Secondary standards set limits to protect public welfare, including protection against visibility impairment, damage to animals, crops, vegetation, and buildings. The Clean Air Act requires periodic review of the science upon which the standards are based and the standards themselves. EPA has set NAAQS for six principal pollutants, which are called "criteria" pollutants:

The definitions in this glossary were initially generated by the students in a senior-level class studying air quality and atmospheric chemistry at Sam Houston State University during the spring of 1995 in a course entitled Environmental Science 440/Chemistry 442, AIR QUALITY. In the main, they wrote these definitions as part of a class requirement. The references found at the end of most entries are an effort to supply additional resources for each of the terms. No supposition of comprehensiveness or absolute correctness can be assumed in any way. Many of the glossary entries have hypertext links to other sites on the Internet. In 2004, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) designated nine counties in North Central Texas as nonattainment for the 8-hour ozone in accordance with the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS). EPA establishes limits on atmospheric pollutant concentrations through enactment of the NAAQS. Ground-level ozone is monitored and targeted for reductions due to its potential for harmful effects on human health. Four main sources of ozone precursor emissions include On-road Mobile Sources like cars and trucks, Non-road Mobile Sources like bulldozers and backhoes, Point Sources like electric generating utilities and industrial boilers, and Area Sources like solvent use and agriculture. In order to reduce ozone and come into compliance with NAAQS, the formulation of an air quality plan is required for all nonattainment areas. NCTCOG works in cooperation with federal, State, and local partners to ensure all air quality requirements are met. NCTCOG strives to achieve attainment of the ozone NAAQS as early as possible and contribute to a better quality of life for all North Texans. Follow the links at left to explore various aspects of air quality or view the "Hot Spots" section highlighted below.

Energy use, transportation, forest fires, and a range of other natural and human activites emit chemicals into the atmosphere and are associated with risks to health, agricultural productivity, natural ecosystems, and man-made structures. Researchers at SAGE are working to improve understanding of the emission sources, chemical processes, and transport pathways of gas and aerosol species. We are especially interested in ozone (O3), fine particulate matter (PM), and their associated chemical precursors, which are transported across regional to hemispheric scales.
Interactions between Global and Regional Air Pollution Transport
Effective air pollution management requires an understanding of how local chemical and transport processes interact with long-range transport of upwind emissions. We address these interactions by analyzing global and regional models in concert with ground-, aircraft-, and satellite-based measurements. Our two focus areas are East Asia, in association with Model Inter-Comparison Study for Asia (MICS-Asia) and the Upper Midwestern United States as part of the Projected Land Use and Transportation on Air Quality ( PLUTO ) project, supported by a US EPA STAR Grant (with Prof. Brian Stone, GA Tech).

Although many air pollutants are invisible, they can seriously impact our health, the environment, and our quality of life. Air pollutants may cause respiratory diseases, cancer and other health effects. Pollutants also may create odors and smog, diminish the protective ozone layer, and contribute to other environmental problems, such as acid rain and global climate change. The air inside homes, schools, and other buildings also may contain pollutants that enter from outdoors and those generated indoors. Mold, radon, tobacco smoke, carbon monoxide, and chemical emissions from products and furnishings are some of the important pollutants that may be present in our homes and other indoor environments. Finding solutions to these and other air pollution problems isn't always easy, and requires agencies, environmental organizations, industry, and the public to work together. The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) works closely with government agencies, the public, and others who are concerned about air quality to:

    Indoor Air Quality
Unlike outdoor air, indoor air is recycled again and again. This causes it to trap and build up pollutants. Common pollutants include dust, mold and spores, pollen, pet dander and smoke. EPA studies indicate that indoor levels of many air pollutants are two to five times higher than air pollutant levels outdoors.
Air Pollution in the Greater Houston Area
According to statistics gathered by the National Resource Defense Council , Houston ranked fifteenth (out of 239 U.S. cities) for "premature deaths attributable to particulate air pollution." While pollution levels in North Harris and Montgomery County are certainly lower than those in central Houston, our proximity to Houston is cause for concern. If we can't personally control the quality of our outdoor air, we can control the air quality inside our homes and busineses.
    Sick Building Syndrome
"Over the past several decades, our exposure to indoor air pollutants has increased due to the construction of more tightly sealed buildings, reduced ventiilation rates to save energy, the use of synthetic building materials and furnishings, and the use of chemically formulated personal care products, pesticides, and household cleaners."
