      CReSIS Established
The NSF established CReSIS on June 1, 2005, with a $19 million grant. It is one of only two Science and Technology Centers established in 2005. The multidisciplinary, multi-institutional center is developing new sensors, methods of collecting data, communication tools and modeling to better understand the mass balance of the world's polar ice sheets and their contribution to global sea-level change. Radars and other sensors developed by CReSIS engineers and scientists will be used to obtain a detailed image of the bed of the ice sheet and map deep and shallow internal layers to determine flow history and snow accumulation, respectively. KU researchers successfully demonstrated they can achieve this at the summit of Greenland, whose ice sheet is more than 3 kilometers thick, on surface-based platforms. The technology has to be further developed and miniaturized to fit on unmanned aerial vehicles, or UAVs, that can cover large-scale areas.

    Aerospace Engineering Overview
Preparation Day In The Life Earnings ... Podcast
Aerospace engineers create machines, from airplanes that weigh over a half a million pounds to spacecraft that travel over 17,000 miles an hour. They design, develop, and test aircraft, spacecraft, and missiles and supervise the manufacture of these products. Aerospace engineers who work with aircraft are called aeronautical engineers, and those working specifically with spacecraft are astronautical engineers.
Aerospace engineers develop new technologies for use in aviation, defense systems, and space exploration, often specializing in areas such as structural design, guidance, navigation and control, instrumentation and communication, or production methods. They often use computer-aided design (CAD) software, robotics, and lasers and advanced electronic optics. They also may specialize in a particular type of aerospace product, such as commercial transports, military fighter jets, helicopters, spacecraft, or missiles and rockets. Aerospace engineers may be experts in aerodynamics, thermodynamics, celestial mechanics, propulsion, acoustics, or guidance and control systems.
Aerospace engineers typically are employed in the aerospace product and parts industry, although their skills are becoming increasingly valuable in other fields. For example, in the motor vehicles manufacturing industry, aerospace engineers design vehicles that have lower air resistance and, thus, increased fuel efficiency.

Mechanical Engineers rely upon knowledge of matter and energy conversions, motions, and forces obtained from computer simulations and experimental investigations of processes and systems. The Mechanical Engineer is able to design mechanisms, machines, and structures to serve a specific purpose, such as the manufacture of high-tech materials, including ceramics and composites, and high-tech equipment, such as advanced automation and control systems. They are also trained to determine both experimentally and theoretically the heat and energy transfer rates that occur within engineering devices, such as internal combustion engines, electronic equipment, robots, solar energy systems, rocket engines, steam and gas turbines, and nuclear reactors. The curriculum in mechanical and aeropace engineering at Rutgers places emphasis on a thorough understanding of the fundamental principles and engineering methods of analysis and reasoning. The curriculum is comprehensive and lays the foundation for more advanced scientific and technical research or industry leaders of tomorrow.
