The Active Noise and Vibration Control Group Noise is more and more perceived as an environmental pollutant. This shift in attitude is reflected in stricter legislation and has wide ranging economic consequences. Traditionally, noise was reduced by passive means like mufflers, damping plates, sound absorbing materials, double-glazing windows, noise barriers etc. All these passive means are mostly suitable for high frequencies and have various disadvantages. In the last decade, active control of sound and vibration (at audio frequencies) has emerged as a viable technology to bridge the low-frequency technology gap. The general area considered is broadband noise transmitted to an enclosed area. We are investigating Active Structural Acoustic Control (ASAC) on the enclosure, and Active Noise Control (ANC) in the enclosed space. Our work tries to introduce novel aspects of multivariable control to this field and is focused on two problems. For the ASAC problem we want to develop techniques for the joint design of the ``smart structure'', the placement of the sensors and actuators, and the synthesis of the control law. For ANC we propose to look at the three-dimensional problem with special emphasis on hitherto neglected aspects of feedback control.

    Active Noise Control
Active noise reduction (ANR) is a rapidly developing technology that is particularly useful in reducing low-frequency noise. The Wyle Acoustics Division has been developing this technology over the past several years and envisions ANR as a solution to some of the community noise problems faced at commercial airports and military air bases.
    • Noise from aircraft operations at commercial airports continues to be a source of annoyance to the local community. Wyle Acoustics Group has recently developed methods for controlling jet noise through active noise reduction (ANR) or "anti-noise." This technology allows a sample of the noise to be electronically processed and fed through loudspeakers in "anti-phase" so as to cancel the offending noise.
This technology is particularly adapted to:
    • Maintenance testing of engines (run-ups). Reduction of low-frequency noise generated behind departing aircraft.

About Research Events ... K.U.Leuven Print Noise and Vibration Research Group - Active noise control applied to acoustic enclosures Description Research work on active noise control (ANC) has mainly focussed on the application of the noise comfort in the driver's cabin of a harvester. Advanced vibro-acoustic modelling techniques are used for the optimisation of the active noise control configuration. In addition, a series of dedicated measurements have been performed on a cabin, both in laboratory conditions as well as in operational load conditions, to characterise the sound field in the cabin and to quantify the source coherence for various operational conditions. Investigated topics include the optimal choice of modelling degree and control convergence constants of a feedforward control strategy, and the use of multiple-source reference signals. Future research work will assess the control performance of the feedforward ANC system and compare it with the performance of a feedback control strategy.
