Announcement: Applications are now being accepted for admission to the 2008 Physical Acoustics Summer School ( PASS ) held in La Cienega, New Mexico. Applications, schedules and general information can be found here Jamie Whitten National Center for Physical Acoustics S ince its inception in 1986, the Jamie Whitten National Center for Physical Acoustics (NCPA) has evolved into the premier university based physical acoustics research center in this country. Staffed with some of the best known scientists and engineers in the world, NCPA engages in sponsored research programs supported through federal agencies, private industries and small businesses. N CPA programs run the gamut of research from basic studies into the nature of sound and its interaction with solids, liquids and gases to the development of prototype systems through applied studies. O ur greatest products are future researchers, teachers, practitioners, and leaders in acoustics. NCPA scientists direct students in laboratory and field research. NCPA is committed to educating students in the frontiers of the physics of acoustics.

A - Introduction
Much has been written in the popular and professional audio press about the acoustic treatment of rooms. The purpose of such treatment is to allow us to hear more of the loudspeaker and less of the room. I am convinced that a properly designed sound system can perform well in a great variety of rooms and requires only a minimum of room treatment if any at all. To understand this claim let's look at the typical acoustic behavior of domestic size listening rooms, which have linear dimensions that are small compared to the 17 m wavelength of a 20 Hz bass tone, but are acoustically large when compared to a 200 Hz or 1.7 m wavelength midrange tone (G on the piano keyboard).

Background
The ocean is often believed to be a silent and tranquil place, but nothing could be farther from the truth. If you lower a hydrophone into the water you will hear noises produced by breaking waves, turbulence, boats and ships, as well as noises produced by marine animals. Animals that produce noises in the inshore waters of North Carolina include marine mammals (like dolphins and whales), snapping shrimp, oyster toadfish ( Opsanus tau ), members of the family
