The Acoelomate animals
Introduction:
2. platyhelminth or flat worms
3. true organ
5. simplest excretory and circulatory system
mesenchyme (paranchyma)
8. Three phyla are:
a. platyhelminthes
b. nemertea
c. Gnathostomulida
Main characteristics:
1. triploblastic
2. bilateral symmetry
3. flat dorsoventrally 4. tegument 5. true muscles 6. acoelomate 7. incomplete digestive system in some; i.e. gastrovascular type absent 8. some have eye spots 9. flame cells or protonephridia 10. mostly monoecious 11. class Turbellaria mostly free living
Phylum Platyhelminthes:
- paranchyma -msot monogenea are ectoparasitic -indirect and direct life cycle -final host is vertebrates in most cases -Triploblastic, Cniderians were not -body fluid moves by muscylar contraction
Class Turbellaria:
-free-living, mostly marines -Planarians -epidermis ciliated on ventral side -mouth on ventral side, no anus -simple life cycle -spiral cleavage -gastrodermis has phagocytes -they are carnivorous -metabolic waste by diffusion thru the body wall -Rhabdite cells -parenchyma cells -protonephridia = flame bulbs -Planaria excrete water out, why?

Vocabulary
Symmetry – general, structured body plan. See radial and bilateral symmetry below. Coelom – fluid-filled body cavity surrounded by mesoderm-derived tissue. Diploblastic – having only two layers of cells during development: the endoderm and ectoderm. Triploblastic – having three layers of cells during development: the endoderm, ectoderm, and mesoderm. Heterotroph – an organism which gets its energy by ingesting food. Hermaphrodite – an individual which can produce both eggs and sperm. Classification In Kingdom Animalia, all taxa are eukaryotic and lack cell walls, multicellular, and generally heterotrophic. Evolutionary relationships among animals have been examined using fossil evidence, anatomy, development, and genetics. You should familiarize yourself with the major anatomical and developmental differences that define animal phyla. In this section, we will look at the simplest and earliest animals – those which have the simplest body structure and tissue organization. The traditional phylogeny is shown below. It is based on the following anatomical / developmental traits:

... Caveat lector PREFACE The acoelomates are so called because each of them has neither a pseudocoel nor a true coelom. The following are comments and other information relating to the acoelomates. This compilation definitely is neither comprehensive or exhaustive. Thus, in addition to the following, you should study as much other material related to the subjects mentioned as you "can get your hands on". To this end, toward the bottom of this WEB-page are listed some bibliographic references that might prove useful. There also is an ankyliography (a list of links) to web-sites that may contain some useful information. If you have some suggestions as to how this WEB-page might be improved, please, contact me. R.
