Main
(kingdom Animalia), any of a group of multicellular eukaryotic organisms ( i.e., as distinct from bacteria, their deoxyribonucleic acid, or DNA, is contained in a membrane-bound nucleus). They are thought to have evolved independently from the unicellular eukaryotes. Animals differ from members of the two other kingdoms of multicellular eukaryotes, the plants (Plantae) and the fungi (Mycota), in fundamental variations in morphology and physiology. This is largely because animals have developed muscles and hence mobility, a characteristic that has stimulated the further development of tissues and organ systems. Animals dominate human conceptions of life on Earth not simply by their size, abundance, and sheer diversity but also by their mobility, a trait that humans share. So integral is movement to the conception of animals that sponges, which lack muscle tissues, were long considered to be plants. Only after their small movements were noticed in 1765 did the animal nature of sponges slowly come to be recognized. In size animals are outdone on land by plants, among whose foliage they may often hide. In contrast, the photosynthetic algae, which feed the open oceans, are usually too small to be seen, but marine animals range to the size of whales. Diversity of form, in contrast to size, only impinges peripherally on human awareness of life and thus is less noticed. Nevertheless, animals represent three-quarters or more of the species on Earth, a diversity that reflects the flexibility in feeding, defense, and reproduction which mobility gives them. Animals follow virtually every known mode of living that has been described for the creatures of Earth.

10. Coeloms And Pseudocoeloms
Acoelomate animals are called acoelomates and they have no true body cavity. The acoelomate phyla are Placozoa , Porifera , Cnidaria , Ctenophora
http://www.earthlife.net/inverts/coelom.html
Throughout these invertebrate pages you will find reference to animals as being Coelomate, Pseudocoelomate and Acoelomate. All these terms, and others explained below are to do with the nature of the body cavity of the animal. Simple animals do not have a body cavity but higher animals like mammals do. In mammals the body cavity is called a Coelom and it is the area that contains all heart and lungs as well as the gut which is a cavity in its own rite. The words used to define different body cavities relate to how the cavity comes into being during the development of the embryo as well as to its final observable structure. Below university level education it is not terribly important to understand the differences but I have put these explanations up separately from the glossary to make it easier to use. Also because of the length of this explanation I am only typing it out once here rather than each time I have used such a term.
Acoelomate animals are called acoelomates and they have no true body cavity. The acoelomate phyla are Placozoa , Porifera , Cnidaria , Ctenophora , Platyhelminthes, Mesozoa, Nemertina, Gnathostomulida.
Pseudocoelomate animals have a pseudocoelom. They have a body cavity but it is not lined with mesodermal cells. It exists between the mesoderm and the endoderm that makes up the walls of the gut. It does not have supportive mesodermal mesenteries. The pseudocoelomate phyla are Gastrotricha, Rotifera, Nematoda, Nematomorpha, Kinorhyncha, Loricifera, Acanthocephala.

http://bioweb.uwlax.edu/zoolab/Table_of_Contents/Lab-4a/A/a.htm
Introduction to the acoelomates From this point on, all animals shown on the website have primary bilateral symmetry. For sessile or slow-moving forms, radial symmetry works fine but for animals that are active in seeking food, shelter, mates, etc. a new body plan is required. Bilateral symmetry (a sagittal plane passing thorough the body divides it into mirror images) coupled with cephalization (concentration of sense organs in the head region) solve these problems. The anterior (front) end moves forward and the posterior (tail) follows. The dorsal (top) side is kept facing up and the ventral (bottom) side is kept down and usually specialized for locomotion. Although there are three phyla termed acoelomates because they lack a space (body cavity) between the endoderm and ectoderm, only one will be included in the Zoo Lab website, the Phylum Platyhelminthes, which includes over 20,000 free-living and parasitic species of animals called flatworms. Note: the term "worm" has been loosely applied to a number of elongate, bilateral invertebrate animals without appendages; it is not a taxonomic term! This site was last modified July 22, 2002.
