Acid rain's effect on plants and wildlife
This article contains the effect of acid rain on plants and wildlife.
Almost everybody has heard about acid rain and knows that it is something bad. But what exactly is it? What are its effects on plants, animals, human beings, and what can be done to solve this problem? The term acid rain does not convey the true nature of the problem and therefore scientists use the term "acid depositions". This is because the acid which has formed due to pollution may return to the earth as a solid or a gas and not just as rain. Depending upon the climatic conditions it could also come down as rain, fog, or snow, and in the wet form it is known as "acid precipitation". Sources Certain industries, as well as emissions from vehicles give rise to increase of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides in the air. These emissions change into sulphates and nitrates under the influence of sunlight and moisture, and get converted into sulphuric acid and nitric acid, which come down as acid rain. Coal generally contains between 2 - 3 % sulphur, and when it is burned, this sulphur is released into the atmosphere. Electric companies and other industries which burn coal cause a lot of emission of sulphur dioxide. Other industries which process raw ore containing sulphides in order to obtain copper, zinc, or nickel also cause an increase in sulphur dioxide levels in the atmosphere.

Is Acid Rain Killing Off Wood Thrushes?
Robert Winkler
for National Geographic News
August 13, 2002 Acid rain may be forgotten, but it is not gone, and now researchers at the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology have linked it to the decline of the wood thrush, a forest bird known for its beautiful song. Email to a Friend Using data from the BBS, from government studies of acid rain and soil acidity, and from a Cornell Lab study of forest fragmentation, the researchers did a statistical analysis and found that increased amounts of acid rain make wood thrushes less likely to breed. An article on the finding appears in the August 12 issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. "I was surprised that we uncovered a negative effect this big," said Stefan Hames, an ecologist and ornithologist at Cornell, and one of the article's five coauthors. "Like many people, I thought acid rain was a non-issue." In the United States, the Clean Air Act has brought about a reduction in the emissions that cause acid rain, but as Hames and his colleagues point out, "many eastern regions of North America continue to experience heavy, wet acidic deposition, and many bird species breeding in these areas show unexplained population declines. Further, long-term acid deposition has depleted the available calcium in acid-sensitive soils, and current emission standards may be insufficient to ensure the recovery of these soils." Despite rising awareness of acid rain's more insidious effects, such as calcium depletion in soil, research on declining populations of North American birds has continued to focus on the dangers of habitat loss and fragmentation. Indeed, the Cornell study claims to be the first in North America to present large-scale evidence linking the population decline of a land bird to acid rain.

Acid rain (or acid deposition, as it's called in technical circles) is produced by the burning of fossil fuels. It is formed when emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides react in the atmosphere with water, oxygen and oxidants to form various acidic compounds. These compounds then fall to the ground in either wet or dry form. Acid rain acidifies lakes and streams and contributes to damage of trees at high elevations. (Check out Mount Mitchell in North Carolina if you want a graphic example of tree damage.) Hundreds of lakes in the Adirondacks have become too acidic to support sensitive fish species. In addition, acid rain accelerates the decay of paints and buildings. Electric power plants account for about 70 percent of sulfur dioxide emissions about 30 percent of nitrogen oxides emissions. Cars, trucks and buses also are major sources of nitrogen oxides.

Environmental Externalities in Electric Power Markets: Acid Rain, Urban Ozone, and Climate Change
by John Carlin
Abstract
The central theme of the 1991 National Energy Strategy, developed by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), was to secure "a more efficient, less vulnerable, and environmentally sustainable energy future." Also, the Energy Policy Act of 1992 (EPACT) required DOE to develop a least-cost national energy strategy that considers the economic, energy, environmental, and social costs of various energy technologies. Many observers argue that this requires incorporating all environmental costs of energy production, including the generation of electric power, in the costs of energy. When these costs are not captured by the marketplace, government involvement at the Federal, State, or local level may be proposed to "internalize" them in electric power prices. This article discusses the emissions resulting from the generation of electricity by utilities and their role in contributing to the environmental problems of acid rain, urban ozone, and climate change. It then discusses the general concept of environmental externalities and assesses the means that have been devised to ameliorate them. The article analyzes the emissions-control requirements for electric utilities of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 (CAAA)

Acid Rain Facts
You've probably heard of "acid rain". But you may not have heard of acid snow, acid fog or mist, acid gas, and acid dust. All of these "acids" are related air pollutants, and can harm your health, cause hazy skies and damage the environment and your property. The 1990 Clean Air Act includes an innovative program to reduce acid air pollutants (all referred to here as "acid rain").
The acid rain that has received the most attention is caused mainly by pollutants from big coal-burning poser plant in the Midwest. These plants burn Midwestern and Appalachian coal, some of which contains a lot of sulfur compared to Western coal. Sulfur in coal becomes sulfur dioxide (SO2) when coal is burned. Big power plants burn large quantities of coal, so they release large amounts of sulfur dioxide, as well as NOx (nitrogen oxides). these are acid chemicals, related to two strong acids: sulfuric acid and nitric acid.
The sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides released from the Midwestern power plants rise high into the air and are carried by winds toward the East coast of the U.S. and Canada. When winds blow the acid chemicals into areas where there is wet weather, the acids become part of the rain, snow, or fog. In areas where the weather is dry, the acid chemicals may fall to Earth in gases or dusts.

A large-scale study has for the first time shown a clear link in North America between acid rain and widespread declines across the breeding range of a songbird, the wood thrush. Calcium depletion affecting the birds' food is a possible cause, Cornell University ecologists say. Using data collected by thousands of volunteer citizen-scientists in the Birds in Forested Landscapes project, scientists at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology showed that the wood thrush is less likely to attempt to breed in regions that receive high levels of acid rain. The finding is reported in the current Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences Acid rain is the broad term used to describe several ways that a weak solution of inorganic acids, such as nitric and sulfuric acid, falls out of the atmosphere as rain, snow, mist and fog. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) are the primary causes of acid rain. In the United States, about two-thirds of all SO2 and one-fourth of all NOx come from electric-power generation that relies on burning fossil fuels, such as coal.

acid rain
How acid rain is formed in industrial areas and distributed over long distances, where it can kill trees and damage buildings and statues. Acidic precipitation thought to be caused mainly by the release into the atmosphere of sulphur dioxide (SO ) and oxides of nitrogen (NO x Acidity is measured on the pH scale, where the value of represents liquids and solids that are completely acidic and 14 represents those that are highly alkaline. Distilled water is neutral and has a pH of 7. Normal rain has a value of 5.6. It is slightly acidic due to the presence of carbonic acid formed by the mixture of CO and rainwater. Acid rain has values of 5.6 or less on the pH scale.

Acid rain kills fish
The most serious damage caused by acid rain in Norway today is acidification of water lakes and rivers in the southern half of the country, and especially in the southernmost counties. This has caused the depletion or complete loss of many fish stocks. Other aquatic animals and plants are also affected by acid rain. The red areas on the maps below show areas where fish stocks have been lost or damaged by acidification
Source: Norwegian Institute for Nature Research Acid rain has wiped out salmon in all the larger salmon rivers in the southernmost counties. Eighteen salmon stocks have been lost and 12 are endangered. Fish mortality became more widespread between 1950 and 1990. Even though the deposition of acid rain over Norway has been roughly halved since 1980, it appears to be taking many years to repair the damage to aquatic animals and plants.
