The terrain is mostly grasslands, plains, rocky areas, bushy areas, semi-desert, savanna, and hills, and occasionally you would find a small mountain, or two. The aardwolf, aardvark, termites, hyenas, lions, and several kinds of reptiles and amphibians are some of the animals that live there. Scientific name: Proteles cristatus
An aardwolf, by Mella Panzella. (Ms. Panzella, if you have any objections to your photo being used here, please [email] me.) It looks like a miniature striped hyena, but it's not. The aardwolf (the name means "earth-wolf" in Afrikaans) is so highly adapted to eating termites that its teeth, except for its canines, have dwindled to mere pegs incapable of chewing meat. Its fangs are still well-developed, and it uses them to defend its territory from other aardwolves. Aardwolves live entirely on two species of termites. One of these species goes dormant during the cooler winter, so they then switch to the other species for sustenance. This very restricted diet means that the species has a very retricted range it can only live where these two species of termites do. An aardwolf doesn't have powerful claws or forelegs like an anteater or aardvark, so it can't dig out the termites. It has to stand beside or on top of the mound to lick up what it can. Aardwolves live in burrows in the earth, and come out only at night.

You will find book reviews and articles about everything concerning the world of savage beasts and free running animals in general, from snakes, scorpions and bats to larger mammals like the African Elephant. There is also articles on the differences between the wildlife in East Africa and the wildlife in South Africa, understanding African animal behaviour. CC Africa's portfolio of luxury lodges throughout East and Southern Africa offer excellent game viewing.
Aardvarks and Aardwolves of Kwandwe
The Aardvark (literal translation from Afrikaans is "earth pig") and Aardwolf ("earth wolf") spend most of their lives with their noses to the ground. Although not rare, they are shy, nocturnal and rarely-seen, so these are two of the most sought-after animals on safari.
Situated in South Africa's Eastern Cape province, Kwandwe Private Game Reserve is one of the few wildlife reserves where there are regular opportunities to see these timid and unusual creatures.
Aardvark - the earth pig
One of the reasons that so little is known about the Aardvark is that this amazing creature is mainly nocturnal and solitary. They are far larger than most people expect, weighing about the same as an adult Cheetah (40kg). Observations at Kwandwe have shown that the Aardvark changes its patterns of movement according to the seasons, and this probably has something to do with its foraging habits. Two termite species are predominantly consumed.

Information On Aardwolves
Aardwolves Information Aardwolf; Length of head and body: 22-31 inches; tail, 8-12 inches. Weight: 20-31 pounds. Habitat and Range: open plains and woodlands in southern and eastern Africa. The aardwolf (species Proteles cristatus), African carnivore generally placed in the family Hyaenidae but separated by some authorities as the family Protelidae. The aardwolf, whose name in Afrikaans means "earth wolf," resembles a small striped hyena. It is yellowish with vertical black stripes and a bushy, black-tipped tail, and it bears a long, coarse mane of erectile hairs along the length of its back.
The aardwolf lives on the open, grassy plains of southern and eastern Africa. There are two geographically separate populations, one centered in South Africa and the other extending from central Tanzania northward to southern Egypt. The aardwolf feeds largely on termites, particularly on the species Trinervitermes trinervoides. It is nocturnal, lives in a burrow, and is usually solitary but may forage in small packs. The litter generally consists of three or four young. The aardwolf is harmless and shy; when attacked, as by dogs, it emits a musky-smelling fluid and may fight. Its life span is fourteen years in captivity.

But Stephanie Debere visited a small conservation trust near Harare, Zimbabwe, where efforts to breed the animals are offering some hope.
At 7pm every night a light on top of a short post in the Tikki Hywood Trust's aardwolf enclosure flicks on. It stands on a small raised platform, painted white to reflect the glow into the Zimbabwean night and thus attract as many tasty insects as possible. This is an aardwolf feeder, devised by the Trust's founder, Lisa Barnard, to supplement the diet of dog food, milk and cereal that she gives them daily. "The aardwolves harvest the insects with their long tongues. I also give them termites, their staple food in the wild. Here, it's their equivalent of candy!" she laughs.
Since October 1999 Lisa has successfully looked after four aardwolves in a purpose-built enclosure containing natural bush and specially constructed burrows. She is one of the few people to recognise the plight of this endangered species, a situation she's desperately trying to redress with Zimbabwe's first aardwolf captive breeding programme. This is set in fertile farmland some 30km north of Harare in the Mazowe Valley.
