"Algebra" is a very broad section of mathematics; there are separate index pages here for specific algebraic categories (groups, fields, etc.) This heading focuses both on the broad principles covering all of algebra and on specific algebraic constructs not included in those other areas. By extension (and somewhat inappropriately) we use it to house a few resources discussing many areas of algebra. Universal algebra is arguably more a topic in Logic (03C05) (Model Theory), hence there is significant overlap. For Boolean algebras and generalizations see Ordered algebraic structures (06E) For groupoids, semigroups, and other multiplicative sets see Group Theory (sections 20L, 20M, 20N).

FINITE SEMIGROUPS AND UNIVERSAL ALGEBRA
by Jorge Almeida (Univ. Porto)
Motivated by applications in theoretical computer science, the theory of finite semigroups has emerged in recent years as an autonomous area of mathematics. It fruitfully combines methods, ideas and constructions from algebra, combinatorics, logic and topology. In simple terms, the theory aims at a classification of finite semigroups in certain classes called "pseudovarieties". The classifying characteristics have both structural and syntactical aspects, the general connection between them being part of universal algebra. Besides providing a foundational study of the theory in the setting of arbitrary abstract finite algebras, this book stresses the syntactical approach to finite semigroups. This involves studying (relatively) free and profinite free semigroups and their presentations. The techniques used are illustrated in a systematic study of various operators on pseudovarieties of semigroups.

We investigate universal operator algebras of directed graphs. We begin with the constructions of the universal operator algebra and universal C*-algebra of a directed graph. We show that each universal algebra can be decomposed as a free product of algebras associated to subgraphs. We also describe the universal algebras of infinite graphs in terms of inductive limits of finite subgraph algebras. We discuss the K-groups and the maximal ideal space of universal operator algebras of directed graphs. When the graph is finite we use the described invariants to classify the universal operator algebras, up to bounded isomorphism, in terms of the underlying graphs. We also discuss commutative quotients of the universal operator algebra of a graph. Lastly we discuss homology and amenability for universal graph operator algebras. In addition to the material about universal graph operator algebras we show that the universal C*-algebra of a directed graph fits naturally into the framework of the maximal C*-envelope of Blecher. In the process of describing the universal operator algebra of a directed graph we show that the maximal C*-envelope is continuous with respect to direct limits. And further, we relate the maximal ideal space of an operator algebra to the maximal ideal space of the maximal C*-envelope of the algebra.

Basic idea
From the point of view of universal algebra, an algebra (or abstract algebra ) is a set A together with a collection of operations on A . An n ary operation on A is a function that takes n elements of A and returns a single element of A . Thus, a 0-ary operation (or nullary operation ) is simply an element of A , or a constant , often denoted by a letter like a . A 1-ary operation (or unary operation ) is simply a function from A to A , often denoted by a symbol placed in front of its argument, like ~ x . A 2-ary operation (or binary operation ) is often denoted by a symbol placed between its arguments, like x y . Operations of higher or unspecified arity are usually denoted by function symbols, with the arguments placed in parentheses and separated by commas, like f x y z ) or f x x n After the operations have been specified, the nature of the algebra can be further limited by

Aleksandr Gennadievich Kurosh 's father was a clerk in a cotton factory. His life became harder at age six with the outbreak of World War I and his family wrote that, despite his young age, Shura (as he was known) followed the events in the newspapers. In the middle of the war, in 1916, Shura entered school, going straight into the third class. After the war Shura's life soon became even harder when, in 1920, his father died of tuberculosis. The family were poor and, in order to survive, Kurosh had to work as well attend school. Kurosh left school at the age of 15 and went to Moscow to take the examinations for the Textile Institute. He achieved very high grade passes in the entrance examinations but was judged to be too young to enter the Institute. He was sent back to his home in Yartsevo where he obtained a job as an accountant. Kurosh never intended to spend his life as an accountant and he studied at evening classes after a full working day. Up to this time, unlike many great mathematicians, he had no particular passion for the subject. His special topic at the evening classes was the stream engine. In 1924 Kurosh became a student at Smolensk University. It was at this time that his interest moved towards mathematics and he later wrote how he was influenced towards algebra:-
