Thabit ibn Qurra was a native of Harran and a member of the Sabian sect. The Sabian religious sect were star worshippers from Harran often confused with the Mandaeans (as they are in [1]). Of course being worshipers of the stars meant that there was strong motivation for the study of astronomy and the sect produced many quality astronomers and mathematicians. The sect, with strong Greek connections, had in earlier times adopted Greek culture, and it was common for members to speak Greek although after the conquest of the Sabians by Islam, they became Arabic speakers. There was another language spoken in southeastern Turkey, namely Syriac, which was based on the East Aramaic dialect of Edessa. This language was Thabit ibn Qurra's native language, but he was fluent in both Greek and Arabic. Some accounts say that Thabit was a money changer as a young man. This is quite possible but some historians do not agree. Certainly he inherited a large family fortune and must have come from a family of high standing in the community.

    Right Angled Triangles
Consider the right-angled triangle shown in the diagram. a b and c are the sides; f is the angle. This is a Greek letter and is pronounced phi . The angle between sides a and b is o , a right-angle . The side c , which is opposite the right angle, is called the hypotenuse (from a Greek word meaning stretch Pythagoras (c582 BC - c497 BC) proved what is now called Pythagoras' Theorem although it had been in use for centuries in the ancient world for building and measuring. The theorem can be described as follows: In a right-angles triangle, the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides. This is written mathematically as a + b = c If a right-angled triangle has smaller sides of length 3 and 4. What is the length of the hypotenuse? From Pythagoras' Theorem, c = a + b If c c = 5 This is the famous triangle used in surveying and measuring. There are many such triangles (eg ). You can check that

    Spherical Trigonometry
One of the primary concerns in astronomy throughout history was the positioning of the heavenly bodies, for which spherical trigonometry was required. The diagrams below show trihedrals, polyhedra with triangular sides. For astronomy, V is the position of the observer, and PQR are points on a sphere centred at V, the celestial sphere. From 2 dimensional trigonometric relations the upper diagram gives:
From the right hand diagram, and the fact that PQR is perpendicular to VP, we can get:
QR = PQ + PR - 2PQ PR cos A = VQ + VR - 2 VQ VR cos a Simplifying and applying Pythagoras' Theorem gives:
+ 2 PQ PR cos A Which can be simplified further, dividing by (VQ)(VR) using 2 dimensional trigonometrical relations to give the first law of cosines for trihedrals:
Construction of a second trihedral called the polar trihedral from the first gives a different set of relationships between the quantities of the first law, the second law of cosines:
These equations can be used to calculate positions on the celestial sphere, however, the laws can be simplified by consideration of the spherical triangle (see diagram below).
