The Modern World-System
Immanuel Wallerstein
In order to describe the origins and initial workings of a world system, I have had to argue a certain conception of a world-system. A world-system is a social system, one that has boundaries, structures, member groups, rules of legitimation, and coherence. Its life is made up of the conflicting forces which hold it together by tension and tear it apart as each group seeks eternally to remold it to its advantage. It has the characteristics of an organism, in that it has a life-span over which its characteristics change in some respects and remain stable in others. One can define its structures as being at different times strong or weak in terms of the internal logic of its functioning. Using such a criterion, it is contended here that most entities usually described as social systems "tribes," communities, nation-statesare not in fact total systems. Indeed, on the contrary, we are arguing that the only real social systems are, on the one hand, those relatively small, highly autonomous subsistence economies not part of some regular tribute-demanding system and, on the other hand, world-systems. These latter are to be sure distinguished from the former because they are relatively large; that is, they are in common parlance "worlds." More precisely, however, they are defined by the fact that their self-containment as an economic-material entity is based on extensive division of labor and that they contain within them a multiplicity of cultures.

Aims of seminar
The aim of the seminar is to regularly study new topics of control and system theory together with their application areas. The topic selection procedure is such that after discussion of the group members they decide on a new topic for the coming semester. During the semester a meeting is held biweekly at which one of the participants presents a subject of the topic. The lectures are based on parts of a book or on papers in the topic. The seminar meetings are in principle held biweekly on Tuesdays.
Topic of 2005 Spring semester
The topic is:
Modeling and system theory of biochemical reaction networks - Enzyme kinetics.
It is likely that the seminar on this topic is continued in the Fall semester of 2005. For the topic of previous semesters see:

Book Description
If you are a researcher or student with experience in multiple linear regression and want to learn about logistic regression, this book is for you! Informal and nontechnical, this book both explains the theory behind logistic regression and looks at all the practical details involved in its implementation using SAS. Several social science real-world examples are included in full detail. This book also explains the differences and similarities among the many generalizations of the logistic regression model. The following topics are covered: binary logit analysis, logit analysis of contingency tables, multinomial logit analysis, ordered logit analysis, discrete-choice analysis with the PHREG procedure, and Poisson regression. Other highlights include discussions on how to use the GENMOD procedure to do loglinear analysis and GEE estimation for longitudinal binary data. Only basic knowledge of the SAS DATA step is assumed. System-specific PI control theory enables analytical tuning - not trial and error, not guess and test. System-specific PI control theory for fluid process control and for motion control has been developed to enable simple analytical tuning while yielding robust characteristics. The system-specific control theory is essentially an adaptation of PID control theory. The system-specific theory enables the determination of the coefficients required to implement a proportional-integral (PI) control system analytically from physical (not abstract) system characteristics of the fluid or motion system. Although the formulae for the PI coefficients are simple, they are applicable to complex systems. PI control theory is essentially PID control theory with the derivative (D) coefficient set equal to zero. A derivative coefficient is not essential and may have a detrimental effect on system response characteristics. The control tuning methods are primarily intended for systems satisfying the following criteria:
    • systems with open source (known) control algorithms including, but not limited to, systems that use computers with I/O boards or data loggers - the methods are not intended for systems with 'black box' PID controllers having sealed PID control algorithms (I/O boards are available from component suppliers such as

    Electromagnetic Railgun System
I've wanted to design and build a railgun since around 1998 when I first encountered a physics problem that dealt with railguns, since then I have researched, analyzed and designed railguns on paper. For my senior project as an electrical engineering student at the University of Colorado at Denver I finally designed and built a railgun. I actually began work on three railguns. One railgun is a DC railgun powered by 12 volt car batteries, it is partially constructed. I call it my "Toy Railgun". It uses a 40 pound electromagnet along the length of the barrel to provide an augmenting magnetic field. The rails can be powered separately by batteries or other low voltage power source up to 500 Volts. In 1945 in Germany Dr. Joachim Hänsler built a 0.5 meter iron barrel railgun powered by two 12 Volt batteries and achieved projectile velocities of 60 m/s [Early Electric Gun Research, Ian R. McNab; Magnetics, IEEE Transactions on ,Volume: 35 , Issue: 1 , Jan. 1999 Pages: 250-260]. That kind of performance is what I want to achieve with the Toy Railgun. The other two are 10,000 volt designs, one with a simple rail configuration and the other a complex design. The complex railgun exists only on paper. So far only the
