Introduction A bramowitz and Stegun's Handbook of Mathematical Functions (with Formulas, Graphs, and Mathematical Tables) was first published by the National Bureau of Standards in 1964. It remains a technical best-seller and is among the most widely cited of all math reference compendia. B ut the Handbook is increasingly out-of-date. A project is underway at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (the heir to NBS) to develop a replacement which will become a major resource of math reference data for special functions and their applications.

UFO1.0 was implemented in UFO, and a basic compiler, generating ANSI C; was produced early in the project. This implemention evolved over time, was used to produce a wide range of applications in UFO numeric benchmarks, programming tools, and natural language processing. Free.

The UFO Project
The United Functions and Objects project has developed a programming language which unites functional and Object Oriented Programming techniques. A large subset of UFO is a pure functional language incorporating the OO notions of classes, inheritance, and dynamic binding. However, UFO as a whole is not a pure functional language. It has stateful objects, which allow programs to be written in a concurrent object-oriented style where appropriate. Safeguards are provided, both in the semantics of operations on stateful objects and in the type system, to minimise the problems associated with introducing state.
UFO-Lite
The current version of UFO is a relatively small language, as shown by the reference manual. A number of important features, such as higher order fucntions and generics, have been deliberately omitted in order to simplify the implementation effort. UFO-Lite is intended merely as a vehicle for exporing parallel execution of heap-based applications on shared memory and virtual-shared memory machine, in particular the Origin 2000 VSM multiprocessor at Manchester. Our studies on parallel implementation have shown that direct use of conventional threads is not suitable for UFO (or, we claim, for any implicitly parallel language). An efficient fine-grain mechanism is required, and parallel implementation will be based on such a mechanism, called

Everything is thread aware (fully re-entrant) i.e you can use it with any multi-threaded system. It works on 32 and 64-bit platforms (and maybe higher). It works on ms-dos/16-bit. It works on Windows (win 3, win95, win98, winNT, win2000, etc). It works on Linux, OpenBSD, FreeBSD, NetBSD and so on. Note that those functions exist since years in a lot of standard libraries.
The source code uses only standard C then it can be used everywhere without any special needs. Just copy and paste the file.

The Houston String Quartet features two violins, viola and cello. This group plays with a rich, full string sound, beautiful for the entire wedding ceremony, or, if desired, accompanying a vocal selection or alternating with organ or choir. A popular choice, the quartet's sound easily fills a large church or room with the sweet and expressive sounds of the strings. Some couples choose to add a trumpet to herald the bride's entrance and the final recessional. The Trio, two violins and cello, or flute, violin and cello, specializes in the works of Mozart, Haydn and the music of the baroque era (Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, and Pachelbel, for example). Threads
This defines interfaces and functionality to support multiple flows of control, called threads , within a process. Threads define system interfaces to support the source portability of applications. The key elements defining the scope are:
  • defining a sufficient set of functionality to support multiple threads of control within a process
  • defining a sufficient set of functionality to support the realtime application domain
  • defining sufficient performance constraints and performance related functions to allow a realtime application to achieve deterministic response from the system. The definition of realtime used in defining the scope of this specification is:
    The ability of the system to provide a required level of service in a bounded response time.
    Wherever possible, the requirements of other application environments are included in the interface definition. The Threads interfaces are specifically targeted at supporting tightly coupled multitasking environments including multiprocessors and advanced language constructs. The specific functional areas covered by Threads and their scope includes:

    FORTRAN routines for computation of Special Functions
    All of these programs are written in FORTRAN-77 and tested on PCs and workstations. Therefore, they should run on any computer with implementation of the FORTRAN-77 standard. Although we have made a great effort to test these programs, we would not be surprised to find some errors in them. We would appreciate it if you can bring to our attention any errors you find. You can do this by either writing us directly at the location (e-mail: j-jin1@uiuc.edu ) or writing to the publisher. However, we must note that all these programs are provided "as is," and we cannot guarantee to correct the errors reported by readers on any fixed schedule. Regarding the specifics of the programs, we want to make the following two points:
    • All the programs are written in double precision. Although the use of double precision is necessary for some programs, especially for those based on series expansions, it is not necessary for all programs. For example, the computation of of special functions based on polynomial approximations does not have to use double precision. We chose to write all the programs using double precision in order to avoid possible confusion which may occur in using these programs. If necessary, you can convert the programs into the single precision format easily. However, doing so for some programs may lead to a lower accuracy.
