Whether it be from math class or computer science class, eventually we will need to learn about number systems, and the mathematics that is involved.
Binary numbers
, as with decimal, octal, and hexadecimal numbers, are organized into columns. To learn binary math, we first need to understand how number systems operate. Let's take a look at the decimal system first, since it is simple and easier to think about. We can consider the number "1234" as,

The decimal system, as with decimal math, operates in "base 10" ( dec being the Latin prefix for ten) using the digits 0-9 to represent numbers, whereas the binary system, as well as its math, operates in "base 2" ( bi being the Latin prefix for two) using the digits 0-1 to represent numbers. The base is also known as the radix. In other words, the table above can be represented as, Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones Decimal Binary In base 10, we put the digits 0-9 in columns 10^0, 10^1, 10^2, and so on. To put a number that is greater than 9 into 10^n, we must add to 10^(n+1). For example, adding 10 to column 10^0 requires us to add 1 to the column 10^1.

Maya Mathematics
Instead of ten digits like we have today, the Maya used a base number of 20. (Base 20 is vigesimal.) They also used a system of bar and dot as "shorthand" for counting. A dot stood for one and a bar stood for five. In the following table, you can see how this works.
Because the base of the number system was 20, larger numbers were written down in powers of 20. We do that in our decimal system too: for example 32 is 3*10+2. In the Maya system, this would be 1*20+12, because they used 20 as base. Numbers were written from bottom to top. Below you can see how the number 32 was written: 20's 1's It was very easy to add and subtract using this number system, but they did not use fractions. Here's an example of a simple addition: 8000's 400's 20's 1's As you can see, adding is just a matter of adding up dots and bars! Since many libraries split numbers like "BF121" into two separate lines ("BF" and "121"), the slide show may incorporate such information into the presentation. The Nashville Number System is a shorthand method of writing musical arrangements that was developed by Nashville studio musicians. It is a powerful tool in the written communication of music. This system uses Roman Numerals ( I II III etc. ) or Arabic Numbers (12 3 etc..) instead of chord letters. This is because people do not always play the same song in the same key. Also, some will use a capo, while others will not. This system prevents the musician from having to rewrite chord charts to reflect his/her own key preference.
All numbers are relative to the key you decide to play it in. For example, the "3rd" in a C chord is an E note; using the root (C) as the number one, and counting upwards ie. C = 1, D = 2, and E = 3, etc. The chart below will help you understand it better and help you to figure out the chords if you need help.
