In Vitro Toxicology Testing
MatTek’s EpiDerm in vitro human skin model and EpiOcular in vitro human corneal model have become increasingly important as replacements for or as complements to traditional animal-based toxicology testing in the cosmetics, personal care, household products, and pharmaceutical industries. One EpiDerm assay is now formally validated as an alternative method in both the European Union (EU) and the United States, while several others continue through the validation process as defined by regulators in Europe (ECVAM) and the United States (ICCVAM). MatTek’s EpiAirway human cell-derived in vitro tracheal/bronchial model is ideally suited for inhalation toxicology studies. Detailed information on that subject is available by clicking here.

Auckland, New Zealand For details on the 2006 Workshop, click here. Workshop photos now available, click here. Workshop Proceedings now available, click here. The purpose of the Workshop is to stimulate research and, in an informal setting, to foster the interaction of researchers in the interface between statistics and matrix theory. The Workshop will provide a forum through which statisticians may be better informed of the latest developments and newest techniques in linear algebra and matrix theory and may exchange ideas with researchers from a wide variety of countries. IWMS-2005 is a Satellite meeting of the International Statistical Institute Meetings in Sydney, April 5-12, 2005.
Endorsed by the ILAS, International Linear Algebra Society. Supported by New Zealand Statistical Association Massey University Royal Society of New Zealand and Statistics New Zealand
Keynote Speakers C. R. Rao, Pennsylvania State University, United States

Confusion Matrix A confusion matrix (Kohavi and Provost, 1998) contains information about actual and predicted classifications done by a classification system. Performance of such systems is commonly evaluated using the data in the matrix. The following table shows the confusion matrix for a two class classifier. The entries in the confusion matrix have the following meaning in the context of our study:
  • a is the number of correct predictions that an instance is negative b is the number of incorrect predictions that an instance is positive c is the number of incorrect of predictions that an instance negative , and d is the number of correct predictions that an instance is positive
Predicted Negative Positive Actual Negative a b Positive c d Several standard terms have been defined for the 2 class matrix:
  • The accuracy AC ) is the proportion of the total number of predictions that were correct. It is determined using the equation: The recall or true positive rat e ( TP ) is the proportion of positive cases that were correctly identified, as calculated using the equation: The false positive rate FP ) is the proportion of negatives cases that were incorrectly classified as positive, as calculated using the equation:

Historical Fiction Matrix The following matrix lists information about the books read. As you
view the matrix, look for common characteristics. (For example, do
most historical fictions include historical characters?) To make a bulletin board version of the matrix, download the directions and headings (requires Adobe Acrobat Reader 2.0 or above.) Last updated October 27, 1997 Title Setting Historical Characters Fictional Characters Point of View Main Character's Conflict(s) Important Events Character's Development Tree of Freedom by Rebecca Caudill *PDF file for Bulletin Board This book took place in Kentucky, Virginia and North Carolina. This book takes place around the year 1780. The historical characters are George Washington, Governor Jefferson, Colonel Clark. No, none of these characters are the main character. 1. Stephanie Venable: Stephanie is nice, courageous, brave and she is also very welcoming to people she meets. Stephanie is the main character. 2. Noel Venable: Noel is Stephanie's brother. He is brave, hard working, nice and he also has as much courage as his sister.
