Located at TERC from 1995-2005, the Regional Alliance for Mathematics and Science Education was the Northeast and Islands Eisenhower Regional Consortium serving Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Vermont. Funded by the U.S. Department of Education, the Regional Alliance was part of a national network comprising ten Eisenhower Regional Consortia and the Eisenhower National Clearinghouse.
The mission of the Regional Alliance was to support K-12 mathematics and science improvement efforts by disseminating information about high quality mathematics and science materials and providing technical assistance and professional development for teachers, administrators, and state education officials focused on improving mathematics and science teaching and learning.
Through its Alliance Schools Network, the Regional Alliance provided intensive technical assistance and professional development to a group of the region's high-need, underserved schools that were committed to increasing student achievement. The focus of the Network was on developing the capacity of school-based leadership to guide local efforts to improve the teaching and learning of mathematics and/or science.
At the state and regional level, the Regional Alliance established targeted partnerships with mathematics or science organizations or state departments of education to provide customized teacher and/or administrative professional development and leadership development addressing key state priorities.

  • Knowles Science Teaching Foundation : The Knowles Science Teaching Foundation (KSTF) was established to enhance the quality of high school science and mathematics teaching. KSTF offers Teaching Fellowships to young men and women who have degrees in science or mathematics and want to teach high school physics, chemistry or mathematics. The fellowship provides both financial and professional support for up to five years, including tuition assistance and a stipend while fellows participate in a recognized teacher credential program.
  • Sally Ride Science Festivals : The Sally Ride Science Club holds Science Festivals for middle school girls, with parents and teachers also welcome to attend. The events feature a keynote by astronaut Sally Ride, Discovery Workshops given by women professionals from veterinarians to rocket scientists, and a Street Fair. There are also adult tracks of workshops for parents and teachers on topics such as hands-on science and gender equity.

    A German merchant of the fifteenth century asked an eminent professor where he should send his son for a good business education. The professor responded that German universities would be sufficient to teach the boy addition and subtraction but he would have to go to Italy to learn multiplication and division. Before you smile indulgently, try multiplying or even just adding the Roman numerals CCLXIV, MDCCCIX, DCL, and MLXXXI without first translating them. John Allen Paulos Beyond Numeracy I began planning this page as an introduction into binary systems. As the first step, I applied JavaScript to create a converter between the binary and decimal systems. But what do you know? It was easier and more natural to write a generic base converter than doing anything special for the binary system. JavaScript is really fantastic. I am looking forward to trying Java as well. Then this is what came out of my first attempt to create a binary converter. It is a more or less general converter between representations of the same number in various base system. Please note that the number of digits in any base ( radix ) N is exactly the same number N. For example, in the binary (N = 2) system there are two digits: and 1; in the decimal (N = 10) there are ten of them: 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9.
