What information does this message really contain?
Mathematical Statistics is about how to formulate and analyze mathematical models for phenomena where Chance plays an important role. Research is done and courses are given in probability theory as well as in statistical analysis. At Stockholm University, special interest has been paid to insurance mathematics. Founded in 1929 with financial support from the insurance branch, our institute does research and lecturing in the fields of Mathematical Statistics that are of most relevance to the insurance world. Nowadays, we also work in biostatistics, models for spread of epidemics, and financial mathematics.

Mathematical Statistics
Mathematical statistics is an interdisciplinary subject aimed at developing models and analytical methods for systems containing a substantial element of random variation. Often the motivation for the research is a practical problem involving the development and analysis of a mathematical statistical model. In this way the section is in touch with many different areas: The development of forecasting models, predictive control and modelling of dynamic systems (Time series analysis), General optimal and adaptive control methods (Stochastic control theory), Planning and analysis of tests (Statistical design and analysis of experiments), Models for growth and decomposition of biological systems (Environmental statistics), Random sampling plans and other methods for quality control (Statistical quality control), Analysis of spectral data (Multivariate analysis and classification). The formulated above aim stresses the following notions: multidimensional joint and conditional distributions, the markov and regression models. Part II “Mathematical statistics” (16 lectures) covers the main notions, tools, mathematical methods and models destined to organise the collection, systematisation and analysis of statistic data with the aim of its presentation, interpretation and drawing of scientific and practical conclusion. The special attention in this part is paid to the methods of statistic estimation of the unknown parameters of the model and verification of statistical hypotheses. 4. This is a rigorous program that leads to a double major in statistics and mathematics. It prepares students for graduate work in both applied statistics and mathematical statistics or a quantitative field. Students should consider additional courses in applied statistics. Students are strongly encouraged to elect CS 159 or equivalent in partial fulfillment of the laboratory science requirement. MA 301 is encouraged for most students as preparation for MA 341
The following statistics and mathematics courses are required beyond the calculus sequence. (A higher-level course in the same subject area can be substituted for a required course.)

Mathematica Laboratories for Mathematical Statistics: Emphasizing Simulation and Computer Intensive Methods
Jenny Baglivo
Integrating computers into mathematical statistics courses allows students to simulate experiments and visualize their results, handle larger data sets, analyze data more quickly, and compare the results of classical methods of data analysis with those using alternative techniques. This text presents a concise introduction to the concepts of probability theory and mathematical statistics. The accompanying in-class and take-home computer laboratory activities reinforce the techniques introduced in the text and are accessible to students with little or no experience with Mathematica. These laboratory materials present applications in a variety of real-world settings, with data from epidemiology, environmental sciences, medicine, social sciences, physical sciences, manufacturing, engineering, marketing, and sports.
Mathematica Laboratories for Mathematical Statistics: Emphasizing Simulation and Computer Intensive Methods includes parametric, nonparametric, permutation, bootstrap and diagnostic methods. Chapters on permutation and bootstrap techniques follow the formal inference chapters and precede the chapters on intermediate-level topics. Permutation and bootstrap methods are discussed side by side with classical methods in the later chapters.

http://www.math.wm.edu/~trosset/402.html
Math 402: Mathematical Statistics Michael W. Trosset The following information is for Spring 2002: General Description
This course is a detailed introduction to the theory of statistical inference. Topics include maximum likelihood and various other methods for estimation and hypothesis testing, especially for linear models. Most assignments involve solving problems and/or deriving elementary propositions. Prerequisites
Math 402 makes extensive use of the methods of mathematical probability. Students should not take Math 402 until they have completed Math 401. Mathematical statistics is concerned with the theoretical principles and methodologies that academic statisticians use to derive procedures for analyzing data. Thus, Math 402 is directly concerned with the theory of statistics and only indirectly concerned with data analysis. Students who desire a single, self-contained semester of applied statistics should take Math 308 instead of Math 402. Math 402 is intended for mathematically inclined students who would like to understand the rationales that underlie many statistical methods. It can also serve to introduce math concentrators to an important mathematical science. Math 308 is not a prerequisite for Math 402; however, students who take Math 308 before Math 402 will have a better sense of why the theory developed in Math 402 is important. Basic Information
Math 402 will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 9:30 to 10:50 a.m., in Room 306 of Jones Hall. The final exam is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 7.
