Mathematical Analysis Placement Test
What is the purpose of the Mathematical Analysis Placement Test? The purpose of this exam is to place students into the appropriate course: Mathematics 1A or 1B. Passing Mathematics 1B (the second quarter of the precalculus sequence) with a grade of "C" or better will enable you to enroll in Mathematics 2A (the first quarter of calculus). Mathematics 1A is offered in the fall quarter; Mathematics 1B is offered during both summer sessions and in the fall and winter quarters. Who should take the test?
If you plan to enroll in a precalculus mathematics course (Mathematics 1A or 1B) and have had only three years of math in high school, or the equivalent, or if your grade in a fourth-year high school math course (e.g., advanced algebra with trigonometry) was below a "C", the Mathematical Analysis Exam is recommended. Test results are valid for one academic year.
What should I study before the examination?
  • Elementary numeric and algebraic operations Rational expressions Exponents and radicals Linear equations, inequalities, absolute values

About this textbook Table of contents About this textbook In this new introduction to undergraduate real analysis the author takes a different approach from past presentations of the subject, by stressing the importance of pictures in mathematics and hard problems. The exposition is informal and relaxed, with many helpful asides, examples and occasional comments from mathematicians such as Dieudonne, Littlewood, and Osserman. This book is based on the honors version of a course which the author has taught many times over the last 35 years at Berkeley. The book contains an excellent selection of more than 500 exercises.

Centre for Mathematics and its Applications (CMA)
The Centre for Mathematics and its Applications (CMA) has the primary function of a research institute in the mathematical sciences, fulfilling both national and international roles in that capacity. The CMA is Australia's representative in the International Mathematical Science Institutes (IMSI) , the international consortium which includes all the world's major mathematical science research institutes. The CMA also cooperates with the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) The CMA publishes a series of research monographs and has extensive series of mathematical and statistical research reports The Head of the CMA is Professor Alan Welsh
    Recent achievements
Sue Wilson and her colleagues in the Centre for Bioinformation Science (CBiS) investigated the reason that disease gene results are not always replicable. Her important modelling result shows that the cause may be due to researchers analysing each gene separately and ignoring the complex interactions among the genes. ANU scientists now are developing alternative genomic analyses of familial data.

The study by a Cambridge University engineer demonstrates that once the collapse of the twin towers began, it was destined to be rapid and total. One of many conspiracy theories proposes that the buildings came down in a manner consistent with a "controlled demolition".

... BitTorrent? [community] foundation forums wiki skins [dev] bugs developers project page coding credits ... donate hosted by: visit: a comparison with BitTorrent BitTorrent is a system that spreads the load of file distribution among downloaders, reducing (or completely eliminating) bandwidth usage on the content server. The server splits the content file into chunks and creates a map file that describes each chunk. Downloaders retrieve this map file and then connect to a "tracker" server. The tracker maintains a list of downloaders that already have each chunk. Thus, a downloader can obtain the chunks that it needs from other downloaders and in turn serve back the chunks that it already has. since BitTorrent's focus is on load balancing in the distribution of high-demand content (in other words, reducing the " Slashdot effect"), it might be seen as the closet "competitor" to konspire2b. Obtaining different pieces of a file from different sources to increase download rates is known as "swarming". Upon seeing the non-swarmed distribution tree used by konspire2b, many people ask, "why not swarm?" or even, "why not just use BitTorrent in the first place?"-some explanation is certainly needed. in systems (such as eDonkey ) where many nodes have a file and only a few nodes are downloading it, swarming makes sense-downloading from more than one source will certainly increase download rates. However, in a BitTorrent peer network, everyone that has pieces of the file is also trying to obtain the file. Does swarming really make sense in this kind of network?

    The Monty Hall Problem
    The Statement
Game show setting. There are 3 doors, behind one of which is a prize. Monty Hall, the host, asks you to pick a door, any door. You pick door A (say). Monty opens door B (say) and shows voila there is nothing behind door B. Gives you the choice of either sticking with your original choice of door A, or switching to door C. Should you switch?
    The Solution
Yes. In other words, the probability that the prize is behind door C is higher when Monty opens door B, and you SHOULD switch! kashyap@ockham.uchicago.edu
