Abstract
We present an algorithm for computing the global two-dimensional unstable manifold of a normally hyperbolic invariant circle of a three-dimensional map. Our algorithm computes intersections of the unstable manifold with a finite number of leaves of a chosen linear foliation. This allows us to guarantee the quality of the mesh on this manifold. We compute growing pieces of the unstable manifold by using a method that does not depend on the dynamics on the manifold. Our method can also be used for the computation of global two-dimensional unstable manifolds of hyperbolic saddle points. The global stable manifold is obtained by considering the inverse map. Name of Product: Rotating Cross Bar SCUBA Manifold Units: About 140 Importer: Ocean Management Systems, Inc., of Middletown, NY. Hazard: Undersized o-rings installed on the cross bar can cause a loss of breathing air from the SCUBA cylinder, presenting a risk of drowning. Incidents/Injuries: There has been one report of breathing air leaking from a cylinder. No injuries have been reported. Description: The recall involves the 200 and 300 Bar versions of the OMS Rotating Cross Bar Manifold. The manifold consists of two valves which have "O.M.S." stamped on the side of each valve and a crossbar that has three O-rings per side. Each part has a black plastic knob. Sold at: Dive stores nationwide from December 2003 through September 2004 for about $238.

28. Smooth Manifolds
A smooth manifold is a topological space with an open cover in which the covering neighbourhoods are all smoothly isomorphic to one another.

Smooth Manifolds
One of the most important changes general relativity forced in physical theory was the transition from modelling space-time as a flat (vector) space to modelling it as a curved space. The former is globally Euclidean (a formal description of flat space): the latter is locally Euclidean, but deviates from this behaviour in large regions. The mathematical formalism for describing curved spaces is the smooth manifold A smooth manifold is a topological space with an open cover in which the covering neighbourhoods are all smoothly isomorphic to one another. One generally defines smoothly for these purposes in terms of a smooth atlas obtain a full tensor bundle for the smooth manifold and a notion of smoothness for tensor fields on the manifold. Given the tensor bundle, we are in a position to describe a Riemannian or pseudo-Riemannian geometry on the manifold. This suffices to allow us the illusion of a Euclidean or pseudo-Euclidean view of all sufficiently small regions of the smooth manifold. The deviations from true (pseudo-) Euclidean geometry in insufficiently small regions can then be understood in terms of curvature, for the meaning of which we must look at differential operators on the manifold. We will in any case need differential operators on our manifold if we are to build anything like our usual physical theories: we must be able to differentiate arbitrary smooth tensor fields (and the relevant derivatives must possess at least some sensible properties). This, in fact, leaves a fair amount of freedom to chose differential operators: however, if we insist on a differential operator which considers our

Math 277x: Foliations and the topology of 3-manifolds. Fall 2001
Instructor: Danny Calegari

Rationale: to give an exposition of some recent developments in the theory of foliations and laminations of 3-manifolds, and their relation to the geometrization conjecture.
Description of topics In this course we will study 2-dimensional foliations and laminations, mostly in the context of 3-manifold topology. In the last few years it has become apparent that there are deep connections between the theory of taut foliations and the Thurston theory of geometric structures on 3-manifolds. Tools from the geometric study of Riemann surfaces - train tracks, geodesic laminations, quasiconformal deformations, etc. - can be adapted to this context, and provide new avenues for the 1-dimensional complex analyst to explore. The aim of the course is to give an exposition of some of these results which are not widely available. In particular, we will show that 3-manifolds with essential laminations satisfy the "weak geometrization conjecture", and we will discuss the extent to which the tools of taut foliation theory can be generalized to a "coarse" context.

This invaluable book, based on the many years of teaching experience of both authors, introduces the reader to the basic ideas in differential topology. Among the topics covered are smooth manifolds and maps, the structure of the tangent bundle and its associates, the calculation of real cohomology groups using differential forms (de Rham theory), and applications such as the Poincaré–Hopf theorem relating the Euler number of a manifold and the index of a vector field. Each chapter contains exercises of varying difficulty for which solutions are provided. Special features include examples drawn from geometric manifolds in dimension 3 and Brieskorn varieties in dimensions 5 and 7, as well as detailed calculations for the cohomology groups of spheres and tori.

Spray manifolds can be designed to fit each die caster's specific application. The standard type of manifold is a straight bar which lends itself to general die spray by sweeping and dwelling at multiple positions. The custom manifold sprays at a singular dwell location and can be designed to spray dies faster and with less lube promoting longer die life and a quicker start-up. Compared to hand spray, the standard straight bar manifold can reduce spray cycle times by 15% and the custom manifold can reduce the cycle time by 30%. Standard Manifolds Rimrock's standard manifolds are designed to mount nozzles in-line on a supply bar of adequate length to accommodate the dies. The nozzle mounting positions and nozzle tip configurations can change on the bar face to coincide with different casting spray requirements.

Authors: Ronald Fintushel , Ronald J. Stern
Categories: math.GT Geometric Topology
MSC:
Abstract:
This article presents the constructions of new infinite families of smooth 4-manifolds with the property that any two manifolds in the same family are homeomorphic and, from their construction, seem to be quite different, but cannot be distinguished by Seiberg-Witten invariants. Whether these manifolds are, or are not, actually diffeomorphic seems to be a very difficult question to answer. The most interesting of these constructions is a surgery that from certain symplectic 4-manifolds will produce nonsymplectic 4-manifolds. This is detected by calculations of Seiberg-Witten invariants. The surgery in question can be performed on any 4-manifold which contains as a codimension submanifold a punctured surface bundle over a punctured surface and a nontrivial loop in the base which has trivial monodromy.
