What Is Linear Algebra?
The Math 45 course at College of the Redwoods is an intoductory course in linear algebra. Its primary emphasis is developing matrix techniques for solving systems of linear equations. Along the way students will study
  • Matrices and operations with matrices Determinants Vector spaces Indepent and dependent sets of vectors Bases for vector spaces Linear transformations Eigenvalues and eigenvectors Orthogonal sets and least squares approximation
What Are The Prerequisites?
If you have completed courses in college algebra and trigonometry, then you are eligible to enroll in CR's introductory linear algebra course. The majority of students in the class will have completed at least one semester of calculus.
Who Takes Linear Algebra?
Students in mathematics, science, and engineering (MSE) usually complete the following core courses in their freshman and sophomore years.
First Semester Second Semester Freshman Year Calculus I Calculus II Sophomore Year Calculus III Differential Equations MSE students are expected to fit an introductory linear algebra course in during one of these first four semesters. At some schools you are required to complete an introductory course in linear algebra before taking the third course in calculus or differential equations.

To ease input, multiplication is implied between adjacent operands. e^(2 pi i) + 0.5 cos (2 pi/3) Variables are assigned using = as in the following example: a = (1 + sqrt 5) / 2 Once assigned, variables can be used in subsequent expressions. The variable ans is automatically updated to the result of the previous expression. Other reserved names include pi, i, e, X (which is used in polynomial expressions) and all the function names. Any other variable names are permitted. varname = 14 e ^ 0.7

This site extends the existing one-way connections among the solving linear systems of equations, matrix inversion, and linear programming. The additional linkages empower the user to understand the wholeness and manifoldness of these topics. They also assist the user to model and solve a problem modeled as any one of the above topics by having access to a computer package solver. The goals are theoretical unification as well as advancements in applications. Illustrative numerical examples are presented. Introduction
Linear programming (LP), Linear systems of equations, and Matrix inversion are often favorite topics for both instructors and students. The ability to solve these problems by Gauss-Jordan pivoting (GJP), the widespread availability of software packages, and their wide range of applications make these topics accessible even for students with relatively weak mathematical backgrounds. The typical textbooks on LP usually devote separate sections for each topic. However, the relationships among these closely related topics are often not presented or thoroughly discussed. This article extends the existing one-way connections among these topics to construct a comprehensive two-way relationship as in the following figure. For each topic, it is shown how the problem may be modeled and solved by either of the associated methodologies.

    Notes on Linear Algebra
These are links to PostScript files containing notes for various topics in linear algebra. These notes were revised at various times in the last few years. At some point, I'll link to Web page and PDF versions, and these PostScript versions will go away. There are some things which are significantly different from many standard expositions.
    • I discuss commutative rings with identity at the start, and fields are given as a special case. I wanted to do this with a light hand, so people wouldn't feel overwhelmed by the abstraction. Some facts about finite fields and fields of prime characteristic are stated without proof.
    • I use small fields of prime characteristic (usually the integers mod 2, 3, 5) throughout the course, wherever it makes sense. I've found this provides lots of good examples, and makes the point that the theory of vector spaces is not just about the reals and complex numbers. I'd like to write some sections on applications of the stuff on finite fields in the future. I don't use general Galois fields, or infinite fields of prime characteristic. The introduction of commutative rings is so I can do determinant theory over commutative rings with identity. It may seem surprising that you can do this without getting too abstract. A glance at the proofs shows that internally, only standard algebraic operations are used that are familiar to students. So you rarely need to remind people that the "numnbers" are actually elements of a commutative ring - it looks like you're working with real numbers! Why do this? So that when you use determinants to work with characteristic polynomials, you're actually using things you've (quietly) justified.
