    Linear Algebra with Applications
    by
    Gareth Williams
A sophomore level introduction to linear algebra which provides a solid foundation in the mathematics and at the same time teaches the student how to use linear algebra. Real applications are introduced. These include an analysis of traffic flow in Jacksonville, predicting weather patterns in Tel Aviv, determining the role of Moscow on the trade routes of Russia, and understanding the behavior of time on a space voyage to Alpha Centauri. Other applications come from such fields as archaeology, demography, sociology, electrical engineering, physics and fractal geometry. Companion Software:

The package contains a collection of test problems, along with Fortran 77, Fortran 90/95 and Matlab tools intended to help developers design, compare and improve new and existing solvers.
The test problems provided are written in so-called Standard Input Format ( SIF ). A decoder to convert from this format into well-defined Fortran 77 and data files is available as a separate package . Once translated, these files may be manipulated to provide tools suitable for testing optimization packages. Ready-to-use interfaces to existing packages, such as MINOS SNOPT filterSQP Knitro , and more, are provided. See the interfaces section for a complete list.
CUTEr is available on a variety of UNIX platforms, including Linux and is designed to be accessible and easily manageable on heterogeneous networks.

A First Course in Linear Algebra The linear algebra textbook with freedom A First Course in Linear Algebra is an introductory textbook aimed at college-level sophomores and juniors. Typically such a student will have taken calculus, but this is not a prerequisite. The book begins with systems of linear equations, then covers matrix algebra, before taking up finite-dimensional vector spaces in full generality. The final chapter covers matrix representations of linear transformations, through diagonalization and change of basis. Along the way, determinants and eigenvalues get fair time. This textbook has more freedom than most (but see some exceptions GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL). It is this combination that allows me to give you It is hoped that by this arrangement, others will help improve the book through rapid correction of errors and contributions of exercises and new material. Overview and resources from a department which since 1984 has developed spectroscopic instruments, computer interfacing, image processing, applied linear algebra, and organic chemistry synthesis procedures for physiological research and clinical use, at Evergreen State College, Olympia, WA.
    http://www.evergreen.edu/biophysics/
Bioanalytical chemistry research at The Evergreen State College is conducted in the laboratory of Dr. Jeff Kelly and Dr. Clyde Barlow. Together, they have been developing physiological procedures and instruments for research and clinical use since 1984. Their work is funded mainly by the National Institutes of Health under the set-aside program Small Business Innovation Research . The lab motto is "If it were easy, it would already have been done." Students can gain valuable laboratory research experience while working on a variety of projects in the fields of physiology, spectroscopy, computer interfacing, image processing, applied linear algebra, and organic chemistry synthesis.
The laboratory staff possesses many years of experience working with optical detection of fluorescence and reflectance, electronic design, instrument construction and the development of software for data analysis and computer control of instrumentation. In the last decade computational work has become as important as theoretical and experimental work in many branches of science and engineering. Numerical linear algebra is often at the heart of many computational science and engineering problems, such as materials science simulations, computational finance, structural biology, and image and signal processing, just to name a few. The success of such computational work relies heavily on the development of state-of-the-art algorithms for solving various numerical linear algebra problems. The goal of the Workshop on Numerical Linear Algebra in Scientific and Engineering Applications is to bring together computational scientists and researchers in numerical linear algebra to foster interaction and collaboration between the two communities. The workshop will highlight not only numerical linear algebra problems arising from several computational science problems, but it will also present recent developments in the area of numerical linear algebra.
