Excision in Algebraic K-Theory and Karoubi's Conjecture
AA Suslin and M Wodzicki
We prove that the property of excision in algebraic K-theory is for a Q -algebra A equivalent to the H-unitality of the latter. Our excision theorem, in particular, implies Karoubi's conjecture on the equality of algebraic and topological K-theory groups of stable C -algebras. It also allows us to identify the algebraic K-theory of the symbol map in the theory of pseudodifferential operators.

Valuations, orderings, and Milnor K-theory. Efrat, Ido. Amer. Mathematical Society 288 pages Hardcover Mathematical surveys and monographs; v.124 This comprehensive examination of the theory of valued and ordered fields describes their classical aspects, such as their arithmetic, topology, and Galois theory. It also includes material on the newly developed study of generalized Milnor K-rings. Efrat works through Abelian groups, then advances to valuations and orderings, including the tree of localities, topologies, complete fields, canonical variations and valuations of mixed characteristics, then describes Galois theory, including Hensel's Lemma and real closures, concluding with K-Rings, including fields, orderings, valuations, wild valued fields, decomposition and realization.

On the K-theory of the coordinate axes in the plane
Let k a regular F p -algebra, let A = k[x,y]/(xy) be the coordinate ring of the coordinate axes in the affine k-plane, and let I = (x,y) be the ideal that defines the intersection point. We evaluate the relative K-groups K q (A,I) completely in terms of the groups of big de Rham-Witt forms of k. This generalizes a formula for K and K by Dennis and Krusemeyer.

Late to merge
Tuesday, 19 Dec 06, 10:51 pm by Aaron Suggs Merging late is more efficient because it minimizes the duration of time when traffic is constrained to one lane. Having a 50-foot stretch of one-lane road does not slow down traffic as long as the flow of traffic is less than one car per 50 feet of road. But if all traffic merges miles in advance, 1 car/50 ft. of road is enough to cause backup. Merging late maximizes the use of available road, which alleviates bottlenecks.
