Title: Homological algebra in bivariant K-theory and other triangulated categories. II
Authors: Ralf Meyer (Submitted on 9 Jan 2008) Abstract: We use homological ideals in triangulated categories to get a sufficient criterion for a pair of subcategories in a triangulated category to be complementary. We apply this criterion to construct the Baum-Connes assembly map for locally compact groups and torsion-free discrete quantum groups. Our methods are related to the abstract version of the Adams spectral sequence by Brinkmann and Christensen. Homological Algebra 2
To determine a method of implementing modules and homomorphisms: how we should represent these objects. To determine how to compute the kernel of a homomorphism or $R$-modules, given that we know how to compute the kernel of a matrix of free modules. To construct the mapping cone of a map of chain complexes. To construct a free resolution (not usually minimal) of an ideal generated by monomials in a polynomial ring. We use successive mapping cones to construct the resolution. To construct a minimal free resolution of a so-called ``stable'' monomial ideal. The method is almost identical to the construction of the Taylor resolution. The horseshoe resolution is used to construct the connecting homomorphism for any left-exact, or contravariant right exact functor, e.g. Tor and Ext. We apply the technique to a specific example i1 : R = ZZ/101[quote a..quote f]
o1 = R
o1 : PolynomialRing i2 : I = minors(2,genericMatrix(R,a,2,3))
o2 = ideal (- b*c + a*d, - b*e + a*f, - d*e + c*f)
o2 : Ideal of R i3 : J = ideal(I_0,I_1)

Title: Homalg: A meta-package for homological algebra
Authors: Mohamed Barakat Daniel Robertz (Submitted on 4 Jan 2007 ( ), last revised 23 Jul 2007 (this version, v2)) Abstract: The central notion of this work is that of a functor between categories of finitely presented modules over so-called computable rings, i.e. rings R where one can algorithmically solve inhomogeneous linear equations with coefficients in R. The paper describes a way allowing one to realize such functors, e.g. Hom, tensor product, Ext, Tor, as a mathematical object in a computer algebra system. Once this is achieved, one can compose and derive functors and even iterate this process without the need of any specific knowledge of these functors. These ideas are realized in the ring independent package homalg. It is designed to extend any computer algebra software implementing the arithmetics of a computable ring R, as soon as the latter contains algorithms to solve inhomogeneous linear equations with coefficients in R. Beside explaining how this suffices, the paper describes the nature of the extensions provided by homalg. Comments: clarified some points, added references and more interesting examples

Description Often perceived as dry and abstract, homological algebra nonetheless has important applications in a number of important areas, including ring theory, group theory, representation theory, and algebraic topology and geometry. Although the area of study developed almost 50 years ago, a textbook on at this level has never become available. An Elementary Approach to Homological Algebra fills that void. Designed to meet the needs of beginning graduate students, it presents the material in a clear, easy-to-understand manner with many examples and exercises. The book's level of detail, while not exhaustive, also makes it useful for self-study and as a reference for researchers.
