    General topology
In mathematics general topology or point set topology is the branch of topology which studies elementary properties of topological spaces and structures defined on them. It grew out of a number of areas, such as the detailed study of sets of points (as subsets of the real line , understood), the manifold concept, the metric spaces and the early days of functional analysis . It was codified, in much its form for the remainder of the twentieth century , around 1940. It captures, one might say, almost everything in the intuition of continuity , in a technically adequate form that can be applied in every area of mathematics. More specifically, it is in general topology that basic notions, such as: are defined and theorems about them are proved. Other more advanced notions also appear, but are usually related directly to these fundamental concepts, without reference to other branches of mathematics. Other main branches of topology are algebraic topology geometric topology , and differential topology . As the name implies, general topology provides the common foundation for these areas.

The book is wonderful, recommends to all. Very good lt;br /gt; lt;br /gt;Geraldo Tavares -Campinas/SP- Brasil. Schaums Outline of General Topology > Customer Review #2: OK as a supliment If youre taking a basic topology class (or any other abstract math class), it is usefull to have other books to reference. This book was only OK as a supliment. I found that you had to be careful the definitions, as some topologists will axiomize ideas differently (I found this happened the most when dealing with seperation axioms). I found that there are a few dover books out there that are a little more readable (Gemignanis, Mendelsons and Willards books all come to my mind). This book wont hurt, but there are other options within its price range. Schaums Outline of General Topology > Customer Review #3: Great resource for college-level math students...

Aims and Scope Instruction to Authors Preparation of Manuscripts TAIA Home ... Topology and its Applications is a research journal devoted to many areas of topology, and is published by Elsevier Science B.V. in Amsterdam. The journal, which began in 1971, has published over one hundred volumes. The Editors-in-chief of the journal are Professor Jan van Mill (Amsterdam) and Professor Jerry E. Vaughan (Greensboro). They and four managing editors will handle submissions. The journal will publish 27 issues in 2004; an issue contains about 110 pages. Aims and Scope of the Journal The journal is primarily concerned with publishing original research papers. However, a limited number of carefully selected survey or expository papers will also be included. The mathematical focus of the journal will be that suggested by the title, research in topology. It is felt that it is inadvisable to attempt a definitive description of topology as understood for this journal. Certainly the subject includes the algebraic, general, geometric, and set-theoretic facets of topology as well as areas of interaction between topology and other mathematical disciplines, e.g., topological algebra, topological dynamics, functional analysis, category theory, etc. Since the roles of various aspects of topology continue to change, the non-specific delineation of topics serves to reflect the current state of research in topology. The journal occasionally publishes "Special Issues." Typically these are centered around a particular topic, research related to the works of an individual, or papers presented at a focused research conference. There is a list of
