They say "life is a game." What this metaphor means, is that in life there are rules, and your role is to play by the rules, attempting to maximize your gains and minimize your losses. When you utter the phrase "life is a game," it is usually in response to some dissatisfaction with the rules such as a personal setback, and is a way of distancing yourself from the emotional impact or the reality of things. A perfect example is the Oscar winning Italian film " Life is Beautiful, " where a father convinces his very young son that being in a concentration camp is only a game.
Jan-Ken-Po
Children love to play games. They seem to spontaneously make up rules, and change them at will, just to have fun. As an introduction to game theory, consider this favorite game of children worldwide: American: Paper Scissors Stone Chinese: Ching Chang Polk Japanese: Jan Ken Po Korean: Ra Sham Bo Here are the rules: opponents face each other with a closed right hand fist. Both opponents then chant the three words together in rhythm moving their fists down each time. On the third time, the opponents suddenly open their hands into one of three signs:

Behavioral Game Theory:
Experiments in Strategic Interaction
Colin F. Camerer
Shopping Cart Endorsements
Introduction [HTML] or [PDF format] Game theory, the formalized study of strategy, began in the 1940s by asking how emotionless geniuses should play games, but ignored until recently how average people with emotions and limited foresight actually play games. This book marks the first substantial and authoritative effort to close this gap. Colin Camerer, one of the field's leading figures, uses psychological principles and hundreds of experiments to develop mathematical theories of reciprocity, limited strategizing, and learning, which help predict what real people and companies do in strategic situations. Unifying a wealth of information from ongoing studies in strategic behavior, he takes the experimental science of behavioral economics a major step forward. He does so in lucid, friendly prose. Behavioral game theory has three ingredients that come clearly into focus in this book: mathematical theories of how moral obligation and vengeance affect the way people bargain and trust each other; a theory of how limits in the brain constrain the number of steps of "I think he thinks . . ." reasoning people naturally do; and a theory of how people learn from experience to make better strategic decisions. Strategic interactions that can be explained by behavioral game theory include bargaining, games of bluffing as in sports and poker, strikes, how conventions help coordinate a joint activity, price competition and patent races, and building up reputations for trustworthiness or ruthlessness in business or life.

article submitted to the Nature Publishing Group, Encyclopedia of Cognitive Science Keywords: non-cooperative, game theory, strategy, Nash equilibrium, social situations Article Definition: Game theory is the mathematical study of human interactions described by rules of play and alternative choices. Overview Situations economists and mathematicians call games psychologists call social situations. While game theory has applications to "games" such as poker and chess, it is the social situations that are the core of modern research in game theory. Game theory has two main branches: Non-cooperative game theory models a social situation by specifying the options, incentives and information of the "players" and attempts to determine how they will play. Cooperative game theory focuses on the formation of coalitions and studies social situations axiomatically. This article will focus on non-cooperative game theory. Game theory starts from a description of the game. There are two distinct but related ways of describing a game mathematically. The extensive form is the most detailed way of describing a game. It describes play by means of a

Silly me. I always figured I would back Barack or Hillary in the upcoming presidential election.
But it turns out I’m really a Rudy man, according to a new online quiz at It’s My News , which identifies your perfect candidate after you answer 25 multiple-choice questions about everything from gay marriage to Iraq to the national debt.
Although an online quiz to determine your vote for the next leader of the free world might sound goofy, games like this are well worth the attention of news organizations struggling to preserve their audience, revenues and relevance, says Michael P. Smith, the executive director of the Media Management Center of Northwestern University.
“By the year 2020, 71% of the population will have grown up consuming games,” says Mike, who is conducting research into how the characteristics of popular games can be leveraged to make hard news and other serious information more compelling to more users. It stands to reason, he says, that lifelong Doom aficionados may be happier assimilating information from games than from inverted pyramids.

The sty file, gameboard.sty requires pstricks.sty , and gastex . The file gameboard.tex has examples.
  • I'm happy to report that Aaron Siegel at Berkeley has written a new Combinatorial Game Suite which is a dramatic improvement over my toolkit. In particular,
  • The Suite is designed to be more flexible and extensible. For instance, you can implement the rules to a new game by writing a plug-in without making any changes to source code.
  • The Suite is written in Java making it portable. (It's been tested on Windows 2000/XP, Linux and Solaris.)
  • Aaron has provided additional functionality that were not part of my toolkit distribution, such as support for loopy games and thermographs.
  • The Suite's has an easy to use graphical user interface.

"We're eyeball to eyeball, and I think the other fellow just blinked" were the eerie words of Secretary of State Dean Rusk at the height of the Cuban missile crisis in October 1962. He was referring to signals by the Soviet Union that it desired to defuse the most dangerous nuclear confrontation ever to occur between the superpowers, which many analysts have interpreted as a classic instance of nuclear "Chicken". Chicken is the usual game used to model conflicts in which the players are on a collision course. The players may be drivers approaching each other on a narrow road, in which each has the choice of swerving to avoid a collision or not swerving. In the novel

    Overview
Algorithmic Game Theory combines algorithmic thinking with game-theoretic, or, more generally, economic concepts. The course will focus on problems arising from, and motivated by, the Internet and other decentralized computer networks. The most defining characteristic of the Internet is that it was not designed by a single central entity, but emerged from the complex interaction of many economic agents, such as network operators, service providers, designers, users, etc., in varying degrees of collaboration and competition. The course will focus on some of the many questions at the interface between algorithms and game theory that arise from this point of view.

    James Cameron's Game Theory
Get kids hooked on a multiplayer game, then show them the movie
James Cameron has transported film audiences to worlds inhabited by carnivorous aliens, time-traveling assassins, and passengers on an ill-fated ocean liner. Now the director of Aliens The Terminator , and Titanic is trying something different. Holed up at his home in Santa Barbara, Calif., Cameron is working on the screenplay for Project 880 , which he describes as "completely crazy, balls-out sci-fi." If it gets produced, it could be the first major Hollywood project that audiences will experience first as a multiplayer game on the Net, and only later on the silver screen. Movies with game tie-ins have been around since the days of Atari ( ATAR ), but the games usually follow the plot. With

    Game Theory and the Law
Douglas G. Baird, Robert H. Gertner and Randal C. Picker
Cambridge, Mass.: Harvard University Press. 330 pp. Paper $24.95.
    From the Book Jacket
This book is the first to apply the tools of game theory and information economics to advance our understanding of how laws work. Organized around the major solution concepts of game theory, the book shows how such well-known games as the prisoner's dilemma, the battle of the sexes, beer-quiche, and the Rubinstein bargaining game can illuminate many different kinds of legal problems. The organization of Game Theory and the Law serves to highlight the basic mechanisms at work and to lay out a natural progression in the sophistication of the games and legal problems considered. Game Theory and the Law will serve as an accessible primer on game theory for non-specialists. Many of the models and ideas it sets forth, however, are new. The authors offer new ways of thinking about problems in anti-discrimination, environmental, labor, and many other areas of law. The book makes few formal demands. The basic concepts of modern game theory are introduced without requiring the reader to know calculus, probability theory, or any other formal mathematical tools beyond simple algebra, which is used sparingly. The book also contains a comprehensive glossary of legal and economic terms, ranging from the absolute priority rule, to the Nash equilibrium, to von Neumann-Morganstern expected utility theory. It offers those interested in law a new way of thinking about legal rules, and it shows those interested in game theory a fertile and largely unexplored domain in which its tools have many applications.
