Fluid mechanics can be divided into fluid statics , the study of fluids at rest, and fluid dynamics , the study of fluids in motion. It is a branch of continuum mechanics , a subject which models matter without using the information that it is made out of atoms. The study of fluid mechanics goes back at least to the days of ancient Greece, when Archimedes made a beginning on fluid statics. However, fluid mechanics, especially fluid dynamics, is an active field of research with many unsolved or partly solved problems. Fluid mechanics can be mathematically complex. Sometimes it can best be solved by numerical methods , typically using computers. A modern discipline, called Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), is devoted to this approach to solving fluid mechanics problems. Also taking advantage of the highly visual nature of fluid flow is

Unlike an elastic solid which responds to a shear stress with a recoverable deformation, a fluid responds with an irrecoverable flow. Variables needed to define a fluid and its environment are: Quantity Symbol Object Units pressure p scalar N/m velocity v vector m/s density r scalar kg/m viscosity m scalar kg/m-s body force b vector N/kg time t scalar s Examples of fluids include gases and liquids. Typically, liquids are considered to be incompressible, whereas gases are considered to be compressible. However, there are exceptions in everyday engineering applications. Introduction
The Journal of Fluid Mechanics exists for the publication of theoretical, computational and experimental investigations of all aspects of the mechanics of fluids. It is published by the Cambridge University Press semimonthly in 24 volumes each year. It was founded in 1956 by George Batchelor , and in 1996 David Crighton took over as Editor until his death in April 2000. The present joint Editors are Steve Davis and Grae Worster, who head a team of associate editors.
Online Digital Archive
The Journal of Fluid Mechanics Digital Archive is a repository of every single article published in the Journal of Fluid Mechanics between 1956 and 1996. Articles are reproduced as high-resolution PDFs, and the archive is fully searchable.
Movie Submission
The Journal of Fluid Mechanics is now accepting the submission of movies to be viewed on the on-line version of the journal alongside the paper. Please check preparation of movies for details on how to submit your movies.
The Batchelor Prize
Cambridge University Press and the Journal of Fluid Mechanics are delighted to announce that the first Batchelor Prize will be awarded to Professor Howard Stone of Harvard University at the International Congress of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (ICTAM) to be held in Adelaide in August 2008.

http://www.fluidmechanics.com/
Company Profile
Fluid Mechanics, Inc. provides the parts and service needs of high, medium, and slow speed diesel engine fuel injection systems plus some engine replacement parts. Since the late 1950's, Fluid Mechanics has specialized in fuel injection systems. These engines are found in all types of applications including marine propulsion, generator sets, and land based power generation plants. Our support for owners and operators of these diesels is worldwide, and encompass virtually all engine manufacturers. Fluid Mechanics has close ties with a majority of manufacturers of diesel engine fuel injection systems and is the leader in servicing these systems. We can provide new parts, recondition existing parts, repair, test, and calibrate these systems. Once upon a time, the world belonged to those who could service the customer cheaper. Today, you had better service the customer better, or take cover. Better beats cheaper because better is cheaper. Short or long-term and often both. This has led to Fluid Mechanics, Inc.'s business philosophy which is based on VALUE and servicing the needs of each particular customer. Value is all encompassing and includes price, availability of parts, service, quality, and technical support.

This photo sequence shows the " gobbling droplets " phenomenon. A jet of liquid is unstable because of surface tension and usually breaks into small droplets. The addition of minute quantities of polymeric molecules provides an additive elastic stress which stabilizes the liquid column. In this situation the terminal droplet has the time to gobble many of its incoming neighbors before its detachment. (Photo by Jose Bico and Christian Clasen, used courtesy of Prof. Gareth McKinley.)

Applied Mathematics
Theoretical fluid dynamics has a long history and remains one of the most challenging areas of applied mathematics with important and widespread practical applications. The nonlinear partial differential equations which model the dynamics of fluid motion also arise in many other areas such as optics, plasma physics and even traffic flow. Thus the underlying mathematics has relevance in many branches of science and technology. The group in St Andrews, with staff members Alex Craik Bob Grundy and Frank Smith , is at the forefront of a number of areas of research. An important feature of much of our work involves the mathematics of problems characterised by a small parameter. The mathematics is called perturbation theory and, although its origins go back to the nineteenth century, its most exciting developments are quite recent. Such mathematics is associated with shock waves, sonic booms and boundary layers which all occur in different types of fluid flow. One area in which we specialise is wave motion - of particular relevance to a seaside university. Of particular interest to us is how waves grow and interact when influenced by motion of the boundaries which contain the fluid. Other work concerns stability theory: the study of how and when a particular flow changes into a more complicated, perhaps turbulent, one.

The preface to Illustrated Experiments in Fluid Mechanics: The NCFMF Book of Film Notes can be found below. MIT's iFluids program has made a number of the films from this series available on the web. (Click to enlarge) Preface This volume contains text and photographic material related to the sound films prepared under the direction of the National Committee for Fluid Mechanics Films (NCFMF). The films, and the related text material herein, cover nearly all of the fundamental phenomena of fluid motions.
Formed in 1961, the NCFMF functions in collaboration with Educational Development Center, Inc. (EDC) in Newton, Massachusetts, formerly Educational Services Incorporated. The NCFMF, a self-constituted group of eleven university faculty members interested in education and active in various branches of fluid mechanics, was responsible for the general structure of the film program, for the substantive content, and for the creation of this volume. Education Development Center was responsible for film production, for a part of the editing and composition of this book, and also provided administrative and laboratory services. Funding was provided mainly by the National Science Foundation, with some contribution by the Office of Naval Research. The program was completed in 1969.
