It seems our math educators no longer believe in the beauty and power of the principles of mathematics. They are continually in search of a fix that will make it easy, relevant, fun, and even politically relevant. In the early 1990s, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics issued standards that disparaged basic skills like addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, since all of these could be easily performed on a calculator. The council preferred real life problem solving, using everyday situations. Attempts to solve problems without basic skills caused some critics, especially professional mathematicians, to deride the "new, new math" as "rainforest algebra." In a comparison of a 1973 algebra textbook and a 1998 "contemporary mathematics" textbook, Williamson Evers and Paul Clopton found a dramatic change in topics. In the 1973 book, for example, the index for the letter "F" included "factors, factoring, fallacies, finite decimal, finite set, formulas, fractions, and functions." In the 1998 book, the index listed "families (in poverty data), fast food nutrition data, fat in fast food, feasibility study, feeding tours, ferris wheel, fish, fishing, flags, flight, floor plan, flower beds, food, football, Ford Mustang, franchises, and fund-raising carnival." Albany: State University of New York Press Review by Janet Shapiro Introduction I taught mathematics in school for several years, and found myself combating the rather discouraging approach used in mathematics education. I wanted people to acknowledge the mathematical skills applied by necessity in many practical situations. So, I welcome this publication which confirms my own convictions, and I am very glad to have the opportunity to review it. After all, UNESCO designated the year 2000 as the International Year of Mathematics, and Maths Year 2000 is a DfEE (Department of Education and Employment) funded initiative. While academic in style, the book includes practical experience. Many of the chapters describe teachers learning from their pupils' responses, gaining insight into how cultural background and priorities of purpose can influence general problem solving strategies. Frequently the message is that the teacher must have awareness and sensitivity to appreciate the train of thought used by a pupil. There are frequent reports of otherwise illiterate people demonstrating innate mathematical ability. Structure However, the book suffers from being a collection of academic papers, each having a long list of citations, which inevitably carries a great deal of repetition. Many pages are devoted to polemical battles, in which the authors refute previous work with a Eurocentrist or elitist bias. The chapters are arranged in six sections, but section headings are not emphasised throughout the text. After reading through the chapters a second time I found that these thematic headings helped me to understand the thesis better. In my own words these themes were:

Introduction [HTML] or [PDF format] Search within this book at Google Print Mathematics Elsewhere is a fascinating and important contribution to a global view of mathematics. Presenting mathematical ideas of peoples from a variety of small-scale and traditional cultures, it humanizes our view of mathematics and expands our conception of what is mathematical. Through engaging examples of how particular societies structure time, reach decisions about the future, make models and maps, systematize relationships, and create intriguing figures, Marcia Ascher demonstrates that traditional cultures have mathematical ideas that are far more substantial and sophisticated than is generally acknowledged. Malagasy divination rituals, for example, rely on complex algebraic algorithms. And some cultures use calendars far more abstract and elegant than our own. Ascher also shows that certain concepts assumed to be universalthat time is a single progression, for instance, or that equality is a static relationshipare not. The Basque notion of equivalence, for example, is a dynamic and temporal one not adequately captured by the familiar equal sign. Other ideas taken to be the exclusive province of professionally trained Western mathematicians are, in fact, shared by people in many societies.

Dr Nancy Lane (please remove '.nospam' from address) , director, Ethnomathematics Digital Library The Ethnomathematics Digital Library (EDL) was developed to support ethnomathematics research and provide access to lesson plans and other curriculum-building activities so that indigenous groups could learn about their 'own' mathematics. The EDL currently holds information about 55 geographical areas and 65 cultural groups throughout the world. The focus will now turn toward the Pacific region as print information about topics such as Marshall Islanders' navigation and Micronesian astronomy is scanned into the library and catalogued for worldwide use on the Internet. The EDL is a component of the National Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education Digital Library (NDSL) at http://www.nsdl.org, which is funded by the US National Science Foundation. In addition, the Australian Academy of Science's website, NOVA: Science in the News , has an excellent introductory article about ethnomathematics with relevant links.

Abstract
Although the term ethnomathematics has been in use in the anthropological literature for quite sometime now, a standard definition of the construct has yet to emerge. More than one definition exists, causing confusion and inhibiting systematic research on the subject. Most definitions loosely refer to it as the study of mathematical ideas of non-literate peoples (e.g., Ascher and Ascher, 1997), thereby ignoring or underplaying its profound relationship to culture. More importantly, current definitions are restrictive and too narrow to adequately explain phenomena that rightfully fall within its realm. Providing a conceptually grounded definition is a necessary first step to galvanize the thinking and investigative activity on the subject. My aim in this thesis is to offer such a definition and to descriptively examine its relevance for theory building and research on ethnomathematics.
I start with a brief review of the current definitions of ethnomathematics, highlighting their parochial nature. I then propose an over-arching definition that derives its grounding from interaction and reciprocity-based models. My definition suggests ethnomathematics as the study of the evolution of mathematics that has shaped, and in turn shaped by, the values of groups of people. I then use this definition to historically examine how mathematics, despite its universality and constancy themes, suffers from culture-based disparities and has been influenced in its development by various social groups over time. Specifically, I examine the role of culture in the learning and use of math, gender capabilities in math, and how even racism has played a significant part in the evolution of math.
